Endorsement of Statements of Solidarity with Ukrainian Libraries

Statements/Press Releases,

The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine who are facing military aggression. We recognize the need to value human life while combating misinformation and safeguarding Ukraine’s unique cultural and artistic heritage, libraries, and archives. Culture, art, and identity are intertwined and ARLIS/NA fully supports Ukraine's library, archive, and museum workers in preserving their cultural and artistic heritage during this horrific war.

As a North-American wide association of professionals in arts and information fields, ARLIS/NA endorses the growing list of statements expressing support for our colleagues in Ukraine. The American Library Association is working with libraries worldwide to “answer the appeal from the Ukrainian Library Association to provide accurate information as a means to support democracy and freedom of expression. The Association for Research Libraries encourages “political leaders in Canada, the United States, and the international community to work together in restoring peace and safety, and to adhere to international agreements and accords, including compliance with the international obligations under the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property and its protocols.”

Here are a few ways to get involved in cultural rescue and support efforts: Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO), The Ukrainian Emergency Art Fund, and the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative.

Statement endorsed by the ARLIS/NA Executive Board on April 4, 2022.
