Networking and Mentorship Opportunities
The Art Library Students and New Professionals (ArLiSNAP) provides an open forum for people just entering the profession. They regularly do CV/Resume review at the annual conference and provide career development support throughout the year. The Professional Development Committee Mentoring Sub-Committee also administers a year long mentoring program as well as the conference guides program. The Society's JobList and Internship List both provide support as you look for professional experience in art librarianship or visual resources management:
Financial Support and Awards
Each year, the Student Advancement Awards Committee gives out the Gerd Muehsam Award and the Wolfgang M. Freitag Internship Award. The Gerd Muehsam award recognizes excellence in a graduate student paper or project, while the Freitag Internship award provides financial support during a student's internship. The Compass Award also supports a project-based internship and is open to individuals who identify as racialized and/or Black, Indigenous, Person of Color (BIPOC).
At the conference, the "New Voices in the Profession" panel is dedicated to the voices of students and new professionals and is always a highlight. the Mentoring Sub-Committee also runs the conference guides program to help get you oriented to the annual conference and make sure you get the most out of your registration. There are also formal and informal gatherings at the conference focused on new attendees. Finally, there are a number of Conference Attendance Awards to support your travel to the conference.
Other Professional Development Opportunities
From the Professional Development Committee's Lunchtime Chats series (run by the Education Subcommittee) to the wide variety of Society events throughout the year, there are numerous professional development opportunities available to Society members. ARLIS/NA also jointly runs the Summer Educational Institute for Digital Stewardship of Visual Information with the VRA, which provides an opportunity to dive more deeply into visual information and image management.
