The Club:
The Racquet & Tennis Club (R&TC) is an exclusive, private social club founded in 1875, renowned for its rich history and legacy in both sports and social life. The club offers its members access to world-class facilities and a variety of athletic, recreational, and dining services, with a special focus on Court Tennis, Rackets & Squash. The Club’s Library contains over 21,600 volumes and represents the world’s finest collection of sporting books. The Library’s largest collections are those of Court Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Americana, Baseball, Fishing, Horse & Hunting.
The Position:
The R&TC is seeking a skilled and motivated Librarian to join the club’s team. As the Librarian, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day organization and maintenance of the Library, ensuring data is up to date, standards are met, and contributing ideas to upgrade and develop the Library program at the club. You will report directly to the General Manager and Library & Art Committee Chairman and work closely with all senior leadership, department heads, and the broader team to ensure the long-term physical health of the club’s Library. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in Library and data management, alongside a collaborative and logical mindset.
Start Date: Flexible / Immediate
Hours: Monday – Friday 9AM-5PM This is a non-union on-site position.
Reports to: General Manager & Library and Art Committee Chairman
Qualifications & Expectations:
- MLS/MLIS degree from an American Library Association-accredited program preferred.
- Experience with Special Collections, Academic Libraries or Museum Archives.
- Experience with cataloging standards, classification systems and digital library systems
- Experience with Large Scale retrospective cataloging projects and data entry. Converting a physical collection into a fully searchable digital catalog. (This will be the primary focus during the initial phase of the position.)
- Demonstrate high accuracy and consistency in data entry and experience with an Integrated Library System (Lucidea a plus).
- Ability to clean up inconsistent or legacy records.
- Ability to establish repeatable workflows for upkeep and maintenance of the collection.
- Maintain Library Shelving accuracy, card catalog accuracy and organization.
- Ability to work in the Main Library one day each week and be a resource for the Membership. Assist them with requests, answer questions and gain a familiarity with publishers and authors in the sports sphere.
- Help create and curate a Library Program that is exciting and engaging for members of all ages and interests. Integrate Library Programming with the Event department to create memorable moments for the membership.
- Patience and persistence are key along with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with the internal team and Library and Art Committee when necessary.
