Collaborative ART Archive (CARTA): Web Archiving for Art Librarians: Why It Matters Now
Websites from artists, galleries, museums, and arts organizations have increasingly replaced print materials as primary sources of information about contemporary artistic practice. As more of these records transition from print to online-only formats, they become increasingly vulnerable to change or disappearance.
How can art librarians begin preserving these resources in meaningful and manageable ways? Join members of the Collaborative ART Archive (CARTA) for an informal discussion about the intersection of web archiving and art librarianship. In this lunchtime chat, we’ll talk about why this work matters and how CARTA supports collaborative collecting of online art resources. CARTA members will also share information about an upcoming communal nomination call to archive– an open invitation to nominate websites for inclusion in the archive that embody the ARLIS/NA 2026 conference theme of Résistance. This is an opportunity to get involved in building web archives today!
