Join Us in Montréal for the 54th Annual ARLIS/NA Conference – May 2–8, 2026
The ARLIS/NA Executive Board and the Montréal-Ottawa-Québec (MOQ) Chapter are delighted to invite you to the 54th Annual ARLIS/NA Conference, taking place in vibrant Montréal, Québec, from May 2–8, 2026.
Montréal—known as Tiohtià:ke in the Kanien’kéha language—is situated on an island at the meeting point of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. These are unceded Indigenous lands, and the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation are recognized as the traditional custodians of this territory. Historically a gathering place for many First Nations, today Montréal is a dynamic city where Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities thrive together. It is a place where French and English coexist, where cultures intersect, and where tradition and innovation harmonize in its architecture, arts, and technologies.
As North America’s first UNESCO City of Design, Montréal offers a rich tapestry of experiences—from stunning architecture and world-class museums to vibrant galleries, orchestras, dance, and theatre. Let’s not forget the excellent restaurant scene, a gourmand's heaven. The city’s cultural calendar is always full, and we invite you to dive right in.
Conference Theme: Résistance
Our 2026 theme, Résistance, explores the enduring power of art, culture, and libraries to challenge, transform, and inspire. We resist censorship by championing access to information. We resist budget cuts by advocating for the essential role of libraries. We resist privatization by promoting open access to research.
This spirit of resistance is deeply rooted in Québec’s history—from Indigenous cultural preservation and the defencse of the French language to the use of art as a tool for political expression. Our conference logo draws inspiration from the Refus Global manifesto, a bold 1948 declaration by avant-garde artists calling for creative and personal freedom in the face of societal constraints. This legacy of defiance and renewal continues to shape Montréal’s identity—and our work as art librarians.
Conference Venue: Hotel Bonaventure
Our conference will be hosted at the iconic Hotel Bonaventure, perched 17 stories above downtown Montréal atop Place Bonaventure. This striking example of 1960s Brutalist architecture was designed by the Montréal-based firm ARCOP in 1967 and beautifully renovated in 2019. Guests will enjoy 2.5 acres of landscaped rooftop gardens, tranquil streams, and a year-round heated outdoor pool—an oasis in the heart of the city. Conveniently located above the Montréal train station and Bonaventure metro (Line 2 – Orange), the hotel is connected to the city’s underground pedestrian network and just a short walk from Old Montréal.
Montréal’s Architectural Legacy
There will be tours to many of Montreal's architectural districts. Montréal’s architectural heritage is deeply intertwined with Expo 67, a landmark event that showcased futuristic design and innovation. The city’s Métro system, inaugurated in 1966, was essential to Expo’s success and remains a marvel of mid-century design. Highlights from this World’s Fair include Habitat 67: A revolutionary housing complex by Moshe Safdie, conceived initially as a master’s thesis and realized as a pavilion for Expo 67, and the geodesic dome created by Buckminster Fuller for the US Pavilion.
Other architectural highlights include:
-
Olympic Stadium: Designed by French architect Roger Taillibert for the 1976 Summer Olympics, featuring the world’s tallest inclined tower and Olympic Park.
-
Westmount Square: A sleek modernist complex by Mies van der Rohe (1964–67).
-
Art Deco Gems: Montréal ranks among the world’s top cities for Art Deco architecture, with bold geometric designs and elegant facades that continue to inspire.

Registration and Events
We are excited to share that we have secured two fantastic venues for ARLIS/NA 2026: the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA)! These locations will truly enrich the conference experience with their inspiring settings and programming.
While registration rates are slightly higher this year, they come with added value, such as three hot breakfasts at the hotel are included! It is a great opportunity to connect over coffee, catch up with old friends, and meet new colleagues in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Registration opens in January 2026.
