A Welcome from your President
Welcome to Toronto and the 40th annual conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America!
On behalf of the ARLIS/NA Executive Board and the Toronto conference planning team I invite you to join us for the premier event for art information professionals. Our conference organizers have chosen the theme “Colouring outside the Lines” as a metaphor for creative thinking. We hope you’ll come help us celebrate our 40th anniversary and discover this remarkable city that exemplifies the spirit of creativity.
Hosted by the ARLIS/NA Ontario and ARLIS/Western New York chapters, the 2012 Conference will feature all of the networking and professional development opportunities members have come to anticipate from the Society's annual gatherings throughout our forty year history.
Professional development opportunities will top the agenda, as program co-chairs Stephanie Frontz and Carole Ann Fabian have put together outstanding sessions and workshops from a record number of proposals. That said, you can be assured that our local arrangements co-chairs Jill Patrick and Karen McKenzie have spared no expense in identifying singular destinations for tours, and top-notch venues for our many social gatherings that will highlight the incredible diversity and cultural richness that Toronto and its environs have to offer. As always, the conference will be significantly enriched by the participation of our valued exhibitors and generous sponsors.
As Canada’s largest city, Toronto is heralded as one of the most multicultural cities in the world where more than 140 languages are spoken. The greater Toronto region is home to no fewer than 125 museum and public archives, ranging from shoes to sugar, ceramic art to contraception, and textiles to television.
The Sheraton Centre, our conference hotel, is in the heart of the business and entertainment districts and is within easy walking distance of universities, museums, theatres and many cultural attractions. Toronto is home to the second largest public transportation system in North America, thus getting to points near and far will be a breeze.
So, come join us in Toronto to enhance your professional skills, reconnect with old colleagues, forge new friendships, and participate in what is sure to be a “colourful” experience!
Jon Evans, ARLIS/NA President
