The Head Librarian is responsible for supporting the educational enterprise of the University by envisioning and overseeing a broad range of mission-driven and operational areas, including research services, instruction, access services, course reserves, and interlibrary loan. Developing and maintaining collections in all fields excluding Hebraica-Judaica, the Head Librarian supervises professional and support staff members who also maintain collections and provide services. The Head Librarian ensures effective outreach to students, faculty, and scholars.
Monday – Thursday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM; Friday, 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM; may work alternate schedule one day per week, 12:30 – 9:00 PM.
- Accelerate the growth of programs in support of student success, such as research services, instruction, access services, course reserves, and interlibrary loan.
- Develop, build, and promote a progression of instructional models to cultivate information fluency in accordance with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
- Develop the Pollack Library’s print, electronic and media collections by implementing data-driven decisions, responding to recommendations from faculty, students and others, and by selecting materials and supervising the selection of materials by librarians in support of curricula and research.
- Maintain the collections through binding or rebinding of print materials and de-selection of material in print or electronic format.
- Supervise and motivate professional and support staff to perform assigned functions at a high level.
- Establish work schedules.
- Oversee all aspects of circulation policies and procedures.
- Manage the Pollack Library’s budget by approving purchases and transmitting invoices for payment in a timely fashion.
- Provide research services as needed by answering research questions from library users or directing questions to other librarians.
- Troubleshoot remote access problems
- Collaborate with colleagues in the planning process for the University Libraries by attending meetings, collaborating on projects, and developing library policies
- Follow developments in the profession and apply them as appropriate.
- Participate in professional activities by means of publications, presentations at meetings and conferences, and service in professional organizations.
Experience and Educational Background ALA-accredited master's degree in library science. Minimum of three years of experience, with increasing managerial responsibilities. Second advanced degree preferred.
Skills and Competencies Forward-thinking and user-centered orientation. Inclination toward innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to library services. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills for high-level contact with students and faculty. Proficiency with computer and Web applications for libraries.
Scope of Responsibility The Head Librarian works under the guidance of the Director of University Libraries and supervises unionized professional librarians, supervisory professional librarians, and unionized support staff. In addition, this position will manage a discretionary materials budget of $200,000.
Occupying four newly renovated levels in the Mendel Gottesman Library Building (levels 2 through 3A), the Pollack Library offers a wide range of collections and services in support of University academic programs, both undergraduate and graduate. With its collection of over 317,000 physical volumes, and access to more than 50,000 electronic-journals, several hundred databases, and 428,000 electronic book titles shared with other libraries at the Wilf and Beren Campuses, the Pollack Library provides students and faculty members with a vast array of information sources. Computing, wireless access, scanning, copying and printing services, along with software tools such as electronic reserves and citation programs, support research and learning activities.
