I am delighted to invite you to Out of Bounds, the 46th Annual Conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) in New York City. The Conference will be held at the New York Hilton Midtown from February 25 through March 1, 2018. As the preeminent event for our organization of art and visual information professionals, the conference will provide you with:

  • program opportunities to discover and deepen your understanding of trending topics
  • workshops and programs encouraging methods to handle challenges in new and innovative ways
  • a variety of social celebrations and tours that connect you with the richness that New York City has to offer, in addition to connecting you with our national and international colleagues,
  • a large exhibits hall in which you can explore the new products and services of a diverse array of book dealers, book artists, systems vendors, and others.

Our hosts, the ARLIS/NA New York Chapter, have developed and organized the conference around the theme Out of Bounds, and have put together an incredible program of thought-provoking sessions, innovative workshops, informative exhibits, festive social gatherings and fascinating tours. New York is an ideal environment to host the Out of Bounds theme for it is a truly American city like no other that draws together cultures to create a vibrant architecture, arts, cuisine, history, language, music and traditions. New York has a history of innovation, creativity, and progress by breaking traditions and thinking out of the box. The New York Conference Program Committee has selected sessions that expand the boundaries of art librarianship and speakers who borrow ideas from outside the library profession to solve problems, spark new initiatives, or broaden audiences for library activities.

New York City offers a rich diversity of extraordinary art and cultural experiences and is home to a wealth of art museums and cultural institutions. Within the city, taxis and municipal buses are numerous and affordable, but New York's quickest and most convenient mode of urban transportation is its extensive subway system which provide inexpensive access to most neighborhoods and city attractions across all of the boroughs. Popular areas of the city - such as Little Italy, Midtown, Greenwich Village, The East Village, East Side, West Side, and Harlem - are easy to explore on foot, with abundant architecture diversity, galleries, public spaces, dining options to keep visitors attuned to their unique surroundings.

ARLIS/NA’s New York City conference organizers are putting together an incredible program. I hope you will join us to explore our theme Out of Bounds with us in February 2018!
