Visa for Traveling to Brazil

A visa is required for all travel to Brazil by persons holding a U.S Passport.  If you travel on another passport, check with the Brazilian Consulate.

The instructions and requirements for application are very clearly stated on the Embassy/Consulate website [for New York: http://novayork.itamaraty.gov.br/en-us/].  However, the requirements vary somewhat in different states.  Please check locally.

You should apply for a tourist visa.

Proof of travel, i.e., an airline ticket, is required as part of the visa application process.

Allow at least 15 days for processing of the application.

If you are in a city with an embassy, visa applications must be made in person and the fee ($160) paid with a USPS money order.  We strongly suggest looking also at the site for TraVisa, which is a visa expediter.  This is especially important if you are not near an embassy.
