The Ryerson & Burnham Libraries constitute a major art and architecture research collection serving The Art Institute of Chicago and scholars in the fields of art and architectural history with more than 500,000 print titles, 100,000 auction catalogs, 1,200 current serial subscriptions, and extensive digital collections. Approximately 10,000 volumes are added annually. All periods and media are covered, but special emphasis is placed on architecture of the 18th through 20th centuries and 19th century painting, prints, drawings, and decorative arts. Overview:
The Teaching, Research, and Learning (TRL) division of Penn Libraries provides research, instruction, and technology support to members of the Penn community and the general public. The Fisher Fine Arts Library is part of TRL and focuses its support on the History of Art department and PennDesign school (comprised of architecture, fine arts, landscape architecture, historic preservation, and city and regional planning disciplines). The Fine Arts Library Intern will facilitate access to and discoverability of lesser-known parts of the collection by assisting in collections analysis, engaging in digitization and metadata initiatives, conducting outreach through workshop planning and technology lending, and promoting the library through exhibition projects and social media.
Responsibilities:
The Fisher Fine Arts Library Intern will be responsible for identifying parts of the arts and design collections for digitization, promotion, and development. This will include surveying the Fisher's rare and specialized collections, and identifying parts of the collection that should be digitized and described in JSTOR Forum, a digital asset management system, and Omeka, an online exhibit platform. By extension, the intern will enrich internal JSTOR Forum/Omeka documentation as well as external guides on image rights and use. The intern will assist in library programs and services, such as teaching workshops, facilitating the circulation and updating of the library's iPad suite, and aiding in the library's web archiving initiative. In order to promote the library's collections, spaces, and programs, the intern will be responsible for posting regularly to the library's social media account.
Requirements:
This position is intended for current students in an ALA-accredited graduate program in library/information science, though students in other graduate programs will be considered. Strong academic background and public service orientation. Ability to learn quickly, work independently, and face new and unexpected questions on a regular basis. Internship is intended for 12-month commitment, but we will consider applications for one full academic year (9 months) as well.

New Orleans Museum of Art Felix J. Dreyfous Library Unpaid Intern/Field Experience Projects 2015/2016 One or two Interns per semester are needed to create and enter metadata, and create scans for the library's scrapbook digitization project. The Felix J. Dreyfous Library at the New Orleans Museum of Art has a collection of museum scrap books from 1910 - 1970s. Many of the early scrapbooks are decaying and are extremely fragile. The library is currently engaged in a project to scan the books and make them available on the library's P.C. with an aim to eventually close the scrapbooks, place them in archival safe storage, and strictly limit access to them. Book 1 has been scanned, and scanning has started on book 2. The scans are stored on the library's computer. The intern will: Occasionally create scans. Review existing scans: Follow previously determined standards and format guidelines to create metadata that can be used as part of a searchable database. Write a proposal for NOMA to become a part of the Louisiana Digital Library - this can be brief, but will include information about cost, application process, quality of scans, etc.

Glenstone, a museum of modern and contemporary art, is integrated into 200 acres of gently rolling pasture and unspoiled woodland in Montgomery County, Maryland, less than 15 miles from the heart of Washington, DC. Glenstone strives to provide visitors with a unique experience through the seamless integration of art, architecture, and landscape. Established by the not-for-profit Glenstone Foundation, the museum, known as the Gallery, opened in 2006 and provides a contemplative, intimate setting for experiencing iconic works of art and architecture within a natural environment. Glenstone presents extraordinary outdoor sculptures and installations within a landscape designed by Peter Walker and Partners and selections from an art collection of significant depth and breadth in the Gallery building by the late Charles Gwathmey of Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects. Admission is always free, and visits are scheduled by appointment to encourage an unhurried, intimate engagement between the viewers and their surroundings.

Glenstone is now in the midst of constructing a second museum building, The Pavilions, measuring 170,000 square feet and designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners, as well as a new public entrance, an arrival gallery with a bookstore, a café and an expanded landscape. These new facilities will enhance the visitor experience and provide significantly more space for exhibiting Glenstone’s superlative collection of post-World War II artworks.

Job Purpose: The Library Collections Intern will be responsible for standardizing legacy library records in the museum's collections management system, CollectiveAccess, and contribute to collection development. The project will facilitate improved organization through the identification of items in the collection, as Glenstone prepares to transition the collection into the new library space in the future. Additional projects proposed by the intern are encouraged.

This is a part-time, temporary position of up to 30 hours per week, during regular business hours. There is flexibility in determining the intern’s weekly schedule.

Essential Duties:

  • Checking existing library records for accuracy
  • Adding Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Getty vocabularies, call numbers, and images to library records
  • Creating intellectual relationships between library, artwork, and archival records
  • Applying call number labels and barcodes to library items

  • Shifting, shelving library items as needed

The Visual Resources Library in the Art and Art History Department of Macalester College is in the process of transferring their digital image collection into SharedShelf, a media management system linked with ArtStor. The intern will assist with the migration and conversion of metadata and images from a legacy database into the new system. Internship tasks will include:

    • Working with exported excel files to facilitate import into SharedShelf
    • Performing quality control following data and image import
    • Creating relationships between catalog data and SharedShelf authorities
    • Verifying the accuracy and consistency of catalog records
    • Monitoring the downloading and importing of images
    • Checking image quality and identifying images in need of rescanning
    • Marking duplicate records for deletion

In addition to database management, the Intern will have the opportunity to observe and engage with everyday projects in the Visual Resources Library, including fulfilling image requests for teaching needs, supervising and training student workers, as well as working with faculty on instruction and assignment consultations, research and reference work related to images. This opportunity is available at any time during the 2014-2015 academic year and may be adjusted to suit the interests of the successful applicant.

The Fisher Fine Arts Library is part of TRL and focuses its support on the History of Art department and PennDesign school (comprised of architecture, fine arts, landscape architecture, historic preservation, and city and regional planning disciplines). The Fine Arts Library Intern will facilitate access to and discoverability of lesser-known parts of the collection by assisting in collections analysis, engaging in digitization and metadata                initiatives, conducting outreach through workshop planning and technology lending, and promoting the library through exhibition projects and social media.                                                                                    Responsibilities: The Fisher Fine Arts Library Intern will be responsible for identifying parts of the arts and design collections for digitization, promotion, and development. This will include surveying the Fisher's rare and specialized collections, and identifying parts of the collection that should be digitized and described in JSTOR Forum, a digital asset management system, and Omeka, an online exhibit platform. By extension, the intern will enrich internal JSTOR Forum/Omeka documentation as well as external guides on image rights and use. The intern will assist in library programs and services, such as teaching workshops, facilitating the circulation and updating of the library's iPad suite, and aiding in the library's web archiving initiative. In order to promote the library's collections, spaces, and programs, the intern will be responsible for posting regularly to the library's social media account.                                                                                                                                                                                        Requirements: This position is intended for current students in an ALA-accredited graduate program in library/information science, though students in other graduate programs will be considered. Strong academic background and public service orientation. Ability to learn quickly, work independently, and face new and unexpected questions on a regular basis.
