Library Schools in Canada and the United
States:
Educational Opportunities for Careers
in Fine Arts and Visual
Resources Librarianship
(Revised edition, November 1995)
and
1999
Addendum
The 1995 edition of Library Schools in Canada and the
United States... was compiled by Art Libraries Society of North America
Professional Development Committee members Louis V. Adrean and Margaret N.
Webster. The first survey was conducted by Jack Robertson in December 1990 and
subsequent surveys were updated annually by Timothy Troy. Information in the
survey was supplied by the Library Schools and is current as of November 1995.
Letters requesting updated information were sent to all colleges/universities
included in the 1994 edition of the survey; fifty-seven (57) letters were mailed
and thirty-two (32) responses were returned. The publication includes only those
library schools accredited by the American Library Association.
The following information, when supplied, is listed for each
entry:
Specialized Course offerings:
- "Fine Arts"
- "Humanities [including component on Fine Arts]"
- "Book Arts [i.e., history of books & printing, OR rare
books & manuscripts, etc.]"
- "Special Libraries [including component on Fine Arts]"
- "Visual Resources [i.e., slides & photographs, OR
hypermedia; BUT NOT school media/a-v]"
- "Other [e.g., administration or cataloging including Fine
Arts &/or Visual Resources component]"
When applicable, the course title, the faculty member's name, and the
frequency with which the course is offered is indicated.
Notes are
included on the following types of student services or curriculum features:
- Availability of financial aid
- Opportunities available to students to gain practical working
experience listed under the heading, "Internships/Practica"
- Possibilities of taking courses for credit in other subject
areas, such as art or architectural history: listed under "Subject
Credit"
- Availability of off-campus or remote teaching site course
offerings
- Offerings of post-graduate / continuing education workshops,
seminars, etc.
Information in quotation marks was supplied by the responding
schools.
"NO" at the end of a note signifies a negative response from the
school.
"NR" signifies no response.
The bracketed date indicates the
last update received by the compilers.
There are four indices at
the end of the Survey:
- Geographic with U.S. states and Canadian provinces
interfiled
- Schools which offer specialized fine arts librarianship
courses
- Institutions which offer dual degree opportunities, i.e.,
graduate degree programs in BOTH library science and art history
- Schools with internship programs as part of the
curriculum.
The compilers thank the ARLIS Professional Development Committee Chair,
Marilyn Russell-Bogle, for her insights into the project and for her wise
counsel in addressing relevant issues.
