PDC: Core Competencies Sub-Committee

Charge

(Approved by ARLIS/NA Executive Board, 5/03) The subcommittee will define a set of core competencies that outline the attributes professional librarians in art and design libraries and curators in visual resource collections ought to have or strive for in order to foster "good practice" within their fields.

Within ARLIS/NA and VRA groups can then use the competencies to develop relevant educational programming at annual conferences. These competencies may also serve as guidelines for the development of continuing education and curricula in art librarianship and visual resources curatorship.

Activities

It is the responsibility of the PDC to update and revise the core competencies on a regular basis. The subcommittee gathers information and data to support the definition of core competencies, including competency outlines developed by other library associations, articles/reports written on the topic, and recent job descriptions.

In 2006, the subcommittee will focus on updating the core competencies as they relate to visual resources professionals. It will make its first report to the PDC, by April 30, 2006. The subcommittee will also assemble case studies and engage in outreach activities.

Future activities on behalf of the PDC may also include a membership-wide (ARLIS/NA and VRA) survey of continuing education needs.
