Party at the Frick Art Reference Library

Wednesday, December 8, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Frick Art Reference Library.
Continuing last year’s newest tradition, we offered a raffle of several special prizes to support the Celine Palatsky Travel Award. Contributing also to the festive atmosphere was an appearance by members of the Dessoff Choirs who delighted us with seasonal offerings. We also announced the new board members for 2005.
New York School of
Interior Design

Monday, November 15, 5-7 p.m.
ARLIS/NY’s program that evening at the New York School of Interior Design consisted of a presentation on digital imaging and a gallery tour followed by a reception.
Library Director Eric Wolf welcomed us for a brief presentation of IDOL: Interior Design OnLine, the school’s new digital image database and presentation system. Following this talk, members enjoyed a private viewing of the NYSID gallery’s exhibition 'Bob the Roman’: Heroic Antiquity and the Architecture of Robert Adam, an exhibition of 18th century architectural drawings from the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London. A reception followed.

2004 Business Meeting at the Brooklyn Museum

Thursday, October 14, 3-5p.m.
Deirdre Lawrence welcomed us at 3 p.m. in the newly renovated library on the second floor and provided a brief tour before the business meeting. A reception followed.
The meeting provided a run-down of
the year’s events and an announcement of upcoming events. Brief reports on our
chapter’s finances, membership, etc. followed. Additionally, Ken Soehner
announced the 2005 election slate.
Roger Kimball
Presentation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. Ken Soehner organized this event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Kimball was a lively speaker, and his ideas and observations sparked some discussion. Kimball is Managing Editor of the New Criterion, an art critic, and author of five previous books.
The talk took place in the Douglas Dillon Board Room followed by a reception in the Terrace Room, adjacent to the Board Room. Casalini Libri very generously offered to cover the cost of the reception.
Walking Tour of
Greenpoint/Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Art Galleries

Saturday, September 18, between 1 and 5 p.m.: a tour of selected art galleries in Greenpoint and Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Caitlin Kilgallen & Suz Massen worked on an afternoon itinerary that took us to some of the most interesting galleries in these vital arts areas.
We visited the following galleries in Williamsburg after starting at the Booklyn Artists Alliance in Greenpoint:

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum

Where: Cooper-Hewitt 2 East 91st St.
Program: ARLIS members were treated to a guided tour of the current "Shock of the Old: Christopher Dresser" exhibition by Stephen Van Dyk (Exhibition Co-Curator and Cooper Hewitt Library Director). This is the first full-scale museum retrospective of Christopher Dresser, a pioneer industrial designer. The exhibition featured 300 major works from his diverse and extraordinary career.
After the exhibition tour there
was a tour of the Doris and Henry Dreyfuss Study Center Library. The Library has
over 60,000 volumes and specializes in American and European design and
decorative arts with materials dating from the 15th to the 20th century.
Queens College

Wednesday June 2, 2004, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
We visited the Queens College Art Library And Art Center, The Louis Armstrong Archives, and The Godwin-Ternbach Museum at Queens College. The Art Library's collection originated with the founding of Queens College in 1937, and has since developed into a leading art library of CUNY.
The Queens College Art Center had a start in an art gallery that opened in the first dedicated facility of the QC Library in 1955. Since the early 1960's, the Art Library has presented several hundred exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, showing the works of both emerging and established artists in diverse media. Gallery talks, lectures, or symposia complement many exhibitions. We toured the ARLIS/NA MEMBERS' EXHIBITION, presenting 23 ARLIS/NA artists.
The Godwin-Ternbach Museum is a teaching museum, chartered in 1981. It maintains an outstanding collection of approximately 3,000 works of art in all media from antiquity to the present, grown through donated art works, and presents exhibitions and related activities. The collection, established over thirty years ago, was originally administered by the Art Library. It is the only diverse permanent art collection in the Borough. Currently on view is MEMORY & HISTORY: PRINTS, COLLAGES and MIXED MEDIA INSTALLATIONS by B. Amore and Pauline Jakobsberg, exploring themes of immigration, family and history.
The Louis Armstrong Archives, like the Louis Armstrong House Museum in Corona also administered by Queens College, preserves a unique collection of the personal artifacts of the legendary musician and promotes his cultural legacy. All programs and events of these venues support the educational and cultural goals of the College and are open to the public.
Metropolitan Museum of
Art

We met for an engaging program that focused on one of the world’s most extraordinary libraries, the Library of Saint Catherine’s Monastery. Founded by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I in 527 at the base of Mount Sinai, Saint Catherine’s contains the largest collection of Christian manuscripts and icons outside of the Vatican.
We welcomed Father Justin, Saint Catherine’s Librarian, who spoke on The Library at Saint Catherine’s Monastery: Preserving the Heritage. He shared with us his involvement in the high-resolution digital project to preserve the monastery’s priceless collection. Father Justin’s presentation took place in the Museum’s Douglas Dillon Board Room. A reception followed.
The nucleus of Saint Catherine’s collection began in Justinian’s reign and a number of treasures from the library were included in the Museum’s exhibition, Byzantium: Faith and Power (1261-1557), which opened to the public on March 23.

Conference - New York City

Chapter members were
busily involved in all aspects of the conference, which turned out to be the
best-attended conferences in the organization’s history.
Additionally the chapter’s board
met five times during the year and dealt with business in-between meetings
through the board’s email group.
We’re happy to announce too that
as of November 2004, the chapter’s Yahoo announcement list migrated to a real
listserve hosted at New York University courtesy of long-time chapter member,
Sherman Clarke. To access the list,

types in arlis-ny in the “forum” box.
