Leadership Update
The leadership of the Cataloging Section for the past year has been as
follows:
2003/2004 Section Moderator: Ann Copeland
2003/2004 Vice-Moderator: Zimra Panitz
Update column editor: Eric Wolf
Webpage editor: Kay Teel
At the Annual Meeting in New York in April, we will elect a Vice-Moderator for
2004/2005 and Zimra Panitz will become the Moderator of the Section. We will
also be looking for a new Update column editor.
Report
Activities at the 2003 Annual Meeting in Baltimore included a very
successful workshop, "Descriptive and subject cataloging for art
materials" (see report on the Cataloging Section Web Site http://www.arlisna.org/conf2003/workshop5.html
). The workshop was followed by a joint Cataloging Problems Discussion Group and
Cataloging Section business meeting. The sole agenda of the Cataloging Section,
apart from the election of a vice moderator and Update Column Editor, was a
discussion of the future of the Section, prompted by an ARLIS/NA board effort to
find ways to streamline structure and reduce the number of meeting rooms needed
at the annual conference. Members of the section felt very strongly that while
there is little official business to conduct, there are many issues affecting
catalogers that would benefit from in depth discussion. The group agreed to
formulate an agenda based on one or more short presentations relating to
cataloging issues, management or trends for discussion during the Section
meeting.
The Cataloging Section will meet on Saturday, April 17 from 5:00-6:30 at the
2004 Annual Meeting in New York City. Our agenda in New York consists of at
least two short presentations on the following topics: Kay Teel will be
discussing the "Stanford model" for cataloging workflow, a model that
has been of significant interest to academic libraries; K.C. Elhard will present
the "Digital Emblematica" project at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign which treats the book as a basic unit of description, while
also providing emblem-level metadata. Other topics have been discussed for
presentation if time permits.
