Chapter Meetings

May 9, 2003, Smith College, Hillyer Art Library and Brown Fine Arts Center.  Barbara Polowy Hillyer Art Librarian, and Elisa Lanzi, Director of Image Collections hosted the joint meeting with ARLIS/Western New York and VRA/Upstate New York.  After a brief business meeting, the attendees enjoyed tours of the expanded and renovated Brown Fine Arts Center, including a thorough demonstration of the Luna imaging lab.

October 17, 2003, Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine.  Anne Haas, ARLIS/NE Chair-Elect and Bowdoin Art Librarian, hosted and chaired the meeting.  The group visited the Visual Arts Center at Bowdoin; received a tour of the Joshua Chamberlain House, including details of its restoration; and then toured the Bowdoin Art Museum, where Caitlin Nelson gave a talk about the current exhibit, The Disembodied Spirit.

December 5, 2003, Boston Athenaeum, Boston, Massachusetts.  Stephen Nonack former ARLIS/NE Chair and the Athenaeum’s Head of Reader Services hosted the meeting.  Stephen and John Lannon, Associate Director of the Athenaeum, detailed the exhaustive, rewarding renovation of the Athenaeum’s historic building.  Collections and services moved to a warehouse in South Boston during construction.  Continuing the theme of construction and all its implications, Carrie Bartels, Access and Collection Services Consultant with NELINET, discussed the planning required to move materials to offsite storage.  NELINET is working in conjunction with the New England Regional Depository to support the storage needs of New England libraries.  Chris Donohue, President of the Donohue Group, entertained and enlightened the attendees with descriptions of the many projects her firm has undertaken to assist libraries in preparing for moves.  The Donohue Group graciously sponsored breakfast, which all enjoyed in the beautifully appointed Boston Athenaeum.

Issues of Concern to ARLIS/NE Members

Two Executive Board meetings were held at the Boston Architectural Center, January 17, 2003 and July 11, 2003.  The Board discussed the following issues:

1)   Diminishing institutional support for attendance at annual national meetings may soon curtail the ability of the Chair or Chair-Elect to attend the annual meeting.    According to chapter bylaws, officers are ineligible for the Freitag Award.  The Executive Committee initiated a discussion regarding a travel award for officers.  The topic will be continued.

2)   The Chapter wants to develop a budget for that includes long-term support for the Freitag Award and the Seibel Scholarship.
