Sixteen Canadian members gathered for their annual business meeting at the ARLIS/NA conference in St. Louis on March 21st, 8-10 p.m. Irene Puchalski, incoming ARLIS/Canada chair, presided. Reports from the individual Canadian chapters and regions were presented. Cyndie Campbell reported on behalf of Jo Beglo, the General Editor for the work in progress “Essays in the History of Art Librarianship in Canada”. This ambitious project will contain an extraordinary roster of essays.
The winner of the 2002 Melva J.
Dwyer Award was Joan Reid Acland for her bilingual publication “First
Nations Artists in Canada: A Biographical/Bibliographical Guide 1960 to 1999/
Artistes des Premières Nations au Canada: Un guide Biographique/Bibliographique
1960 à 1999”, published in 2001 by the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky
Institute for Studies in Canadian Art. Administered by Carole Goldsmith, Chair,
ARLIS/Canada chapter, the jury members for this year’s award were: Diana
Cooper, University of British Columbia; Rosemary Haddad, Canadian Centre for
Architecture; Irene Puchalski, University of Toronto. Karen McKenzie presented
the award at the 2002 ARLIS/NA convocation ceremony, which was held at the
Sheldon Concert Hall, St. Louis.
This year’s recipient of the
David Mirvish Books Travel Award was Kathy Zimon.
A very special national meeting
took place May 31st – June 2nd, 2002. This was the
second time that ARLIS/Canada had a chance to meet within Canada. Forty members
and guests attended ‘Springtime in the Rockies’ a joint ARLIS
Canada/Northwest Chapter regional conference held at the Banff Centre, Alberta.
An event-filled itinerary included panel presentations on “The Art and Science
of Fundraising” and “Digital Initiatives and New Challenges in Art
Librarianship”, a case study of the Banff Springs Hotel was presented by Dr.
Geoffrey Simmins, and an engaging presentation on the art history of the
Canadian Rockies was given by Lisa Christensen. Tours included the Banff Centre
Campus, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, the elegant Fairmont Banff
Springs Hotel, and the Glenbow Museum Library and Archives. Those with energy to
spare enjoyed a Sunday morning hike in the Rockies. Kudos go to James Rout,
Marilyn Nasserden, Kathy Zimon, Cheryl Siegel and John Cull for organizing this
successful retreat.
Jury members for the 2003 Melva
J. Dwyer Award were appointed in fall 2002. The jury members are: Melinda
Reinhart, Concordia University; Margaret English, University of Toronto; Kathy
Zimon, University of Calgary (retired); Irene Puchalski, University of Toronto,
Chair. A call for nominations for the 2003 Dwyer Award was posted on carlis-l in
French and English, and on arlis-l in English in early November and again in
early December. For the first time Canadian publishers associations and Canadian
writers associations were also contacted. The Chair arranged for jurors to
receive for review the nominated titles not in their libraries. The winner will
be announced at the ARLIS/NA annual conference in Baltimore in 2003.
Irene Puchalski submitted a report on ARLIS/Canada Chapter activities for the August 2002 issue of Update; attended and presented reports at the ARLIS/Ontario spring meeting in Oshawa, the joint ARLIS/MOQ and ARLIS/Ontario fall meeting in Montreal, and the ARLIS/NW fall meeting in Vancouver; explored charitable status for ARLIS/Canada; and attended the mid-year Executive Board meeting in NYC.

On May 17th ARLIS/MOQ
held their spring meeting at the Montreal Botanical Garden. In addition to the
membership meeting, events included a tour of the Library and Mediatheque by
Botanist/Librarian Céline Arsenault and guided tours of the Garden were
provided by volunteers. The fall meeting on October 24th and 25th
took place at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, where ARLIS/Ontario
met jointly with ARLIS/MOQ to celebrate the 15th anniversary of ARLIS/MOQ.
Events included the sessions ‘Documenting the Ephemeral Arts’ and ‘To See
Ourselves’, a joint dinner, fund-raising event, and guided tours of the
Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Sam Taylor-Wood exhibition at the Musée.
ARLIS/Ontario began the year
with a spring meeting on April 18th held at the Robert McLaughlin
Gallery in Oshawa. Highlights included a guided tour of the Marian Dale Scott
exhibition and artists’ papers owned by the Gallery. The joint ARLIS/MOQ and
ARLIS/Ontario fall meeting, entitled ‘Making Links’ took place in Montreal
(see above for more details). The year concluded with a successful fund-raising
Christmas social held at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto.
In addition to the joint ARLIS Canada/NW Banff Retreat hosted by the Alberta branch of the Northwest Chapter on May 31st – June 2nd, the annual Northwest fall meeting took place December 6th and 7th in Vancouver, B.C. The meeting began at Cheryl Siegel’s (Chair, ARLIS/NW) home with a delicious dinner followed by a lecture by Vancouver historian Don Luxton. The following day’s events included a business meeting and tour at the Vancouver Public Library, a demo of the Library’s digital photo collection and tour of the Library’s Special Collections Division. The day culminated with a guided tour of the Tom Thomson exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Seize
membres canadiens se sont réunis pour la séance d’affaires de la réunion
annuelle au Congrès d’ARLIS/NA à St.Louis, le 21 mars 2002, de 20h00 à
22h30. Irene Puchalski, présidente élue d’ARLIS/Canada a présidé la réunion.
Les représentants des sections canadiennes et régionales ont présenté leurs
rapports. Cyndie Campbell a annoncé des nouvelles de la part de Jo Beglo, éditeur
en chef de la publication en cours « Essais sur l’histoire des bibliothèques
d’art au Canada ». Ce projet d’envergure sera composé de textes
remarquables.

Joan Reid Acland a reçu le Prix Melva J. Dwyer 2002, pour l’ouvrage bilingue
« First Nations Artists in Canada: A Biographical/Bibliographical Guide
1969 to 1999/Artistes des Premières Nations du Canada : Un guide
Biographique/Bibliographique 1960 à 1999 », publié par l’Institut de
recherche en art canadien Gail et Stephen A. Jarislowsky, 2001. Le prix fut
administré par Carole Goldsmith, Présidente d’ARLIS/Canada. Les membres du
jury étaient Diana Cooper, de l’University of British Columbia, Rosemary
Haddad du Centre Canadien d’Architecture et Irene Puchalski de l’ University
of Toronto. Le prix fut présenté par Karen McKenzie à la cérémonie de
remise des prix lors du Congrès annuel d’ARLIS/NA au Sheldon Concert Hall à St.Louis.

Mirvish Books Travel Award.
C’est
au Banff Centre en Alberta que s’est tenue du 31 mai au 2 juin 2002 une réunion
nationale d’ARLIS/Canada. C’était la deuxième fois que ARLIS/Canada se réunissait
en terre canadienne. Une quarantaine de membres et invités ont assisté à
cette conférence régionale conjointe d’ARLIS/Canada et ARLIS/Northwest
intitulée « Le Printemps dans les Rocheuses »
En début de programme, une table ronde sur « L’Art et la science
des levées de fonds », suivie de « Les Initiatives de numérisation
et les nouveaux défis de la bibliothéconomie dans le domaine de l’art ».
Geoffrey Simmins a présenté une conférence sur le Banff Spring Hotel et Lisa
Christens a présenté une conférence sur l’histoire de l’art des Rocheuses
canadiennes. Les membres ont visité le campus du Banff Centre, le Whyte Museum
of the Canadian Rockies, l’Hotel Banff Springs et la bibliothèque et les
archives du Glenbow Museum. Dimanche matin, certains membres se sont détendus
en pratiquant la randonnée pédestre. Merci aux organisateurs de cette
fructueuse rencontre : James Rout, Marilyn Nasserden, Kathy Zimon, Cheryl
Siegel et John Cull .
Les
membres du jury pour le Prix Melva J. Dwyer 2003 furent choisis à l’automne
2002. Ce sont : Melinda Reinhart, Concordia University, Margaret English de
l’University of Toronto, Kathy Zimon de l’University of Calgary (retraitée)
et Irene Puchalski de l’
University of Toronto, Présidente. La demande pour des mises en candidatures
pour le Prix Dwyer 2003 fut affichée sur le site carlis-l en français et en
anglais et sur le site arlis-l
en anglais au début de novembre et décembre. Pour la première fois,
l’Association des éditeurs canadiens et l’Association des écrivains
canadiens furent contactés. La présidente a fait parvenir aux membres du jury
les copies des ouvrages mis en candidature qui ne se trouvaient pas dans
leurs bibliothèques. Le récipiendaire du prix sera dévoilé à la cérémonie
de remise des prix au Congrès annuel d’ARLIS/NA à Baltimore en 2003.
Irene
Puchalski a présenté un rapport des activités de la Section ARLIS/Canada dans
le numéro d’août du bimestriel Update. Elle a participé et présenté des
rapports à la réunion du printemps de la Section ARLIS/Ontario à Oshawa, à
la réunion conjointe à Montréal à l’automne et à la réunion d’automne
de la Section ARLIS/NW à Vancouver. En plus, elle s’est renseignée au sujet
d’un possible statut d’organisme charitable pour ARLIS/Canada.
Elle
a aussi participé à la réunion semi-annuelle du ARLIS/Executive Board Meeting
à New York.

La
réunion du printemps d’ARLIS/MOQ s’est déroulée le 17 mai au Jardin
botanique de Montréal.
Après la séance de travail, les membres ont visité la bibliothèque et
la médiathèque avec la botaniste bibliothécaire Céline Arsenault. La journée
s’est terminée par des visites guidées des jardins. La réunion d’automne
a eu lieu le 24 et 25 octobre au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. Cette
réunion mixte avec la section d’ARLIS/Ontario fêtait le 15e
anniversaire d’ARLIS/MOQ. Les thèmes
de la journée étaient : « Documenter les arts éphémères »
et « Images de soi ». En plus du souper conjoint, les membres ont
participé à une levée de fonds, à des visites guidées au Centre Canadien
d’Architecture et visité l’exposition « Sam Taylor Wood » au
Musée d’art contemporain.
La
section d’ARLIS/Ontario s’est réuni à Oshawa, le 18 avril pour la réunion
du printemps au Robert McLaughlin Gallery. Les visites offertes aux membres étaient
l’exposition « Marian Dale Scott » et les archives d’artistes de
l’institution. La réunion conjointe d’ARLIS/MOQ et d’ARLIS/Ontario à
l’automne intitulée « Créer des liens » s’est déroulé à
Montréal (voir ci-dessus). L’année s’est terminée avec une levée de
fonds lors d’un party de Noël au Ontario College of Art and Design à
Toronto.
En plus de la réunion conjointe d’ARLIS Canada/NW à Banff, sous l’égide de la section Alberta de la Section ARLIS/NW du 31 mai au 2 juin, la section s’est réunie à Vancouver le 6 et 7 décembre pour la réunion annuelle. La rencontre s’est déroulée chez Cheryl Siegel. Après un délicieux repas, le conférencier invité Don Luxton, historien de Vancouver prit la parole. La journée suivante, après la séance d’affaires, les membres ont visité la Vancouver Public Library, assisté à une présentation de la collection de photographies numériques de la bibliothèque et visité les collections spéciales. La journée s’est terminée au Vancouver Art Gallery avec une visite guidée de l’exposition « Tom Thomson ».
