Research Committee members
wrote columns for the April and August 2002 issues of Update
to advertise the awards and recognize member publications.
Terrie Wilson and John Hagood will be submitting the April 2003 article
announcing the award winners, and recognizing member publications and research
projects. We had more Update
columns planned, but editor Linda Zieper gently requested that our committee
submit only two columns annually. Award/Grant
solicitations were posted at regular intervals on ARLIS-L, and individual
Research Committee members contacted ARLIS chapters to publicize the awards
application process.
Following approval by the
Executive Board, award names were changed as follows:
“H.W. Wilson Foundation Research Award” to “H.W. Wilson Foundation
Research Grant”; “Worldwide Books Publication Award” to “Worldwide Books
Award for Publications”; and “Worldwide Books Electronic Resources Award”
to “Worldwide Books Award for Electronic Resources.”
Web pages on the AWS were modified to reflect these changes.
Applications for awards were
reviewed by the committee, and winners selected.
The committee also considered a special funding request forwarded by the
EB.
The Research Committee will become a subcommittee of the Awards Committee following the conference in Baltimore. We plan to meet as scheduled to discuss the transition and other issues.

through the listserv and Update. Individual members of the Research Committee
took responsibility for contacting local chapters to promote the awards.

According to the 1997 Annual
Report, this has been completed—although it is probably due for an update and
will be on the agenda for our business meeting in Baltimore.

Issues for the Executive Board
A. Communication logistics
The Research Committee would
benefit from some written direction in the following areas:
1.
The Research Committee transition from an ad hoc committee to a
subcomittee of the Awards Committee. Does
constitution of committee remain the same?
How will reporting structure change?
How will the subcommittee conduct business at the annual meeting?
2. Solicitation of funds for the Worldwide and Wilson awards
When this should happen? For at least one award we have a multi-year commitment; how do we know when it’s time to ask again?
Who should contact Worldwide and/or Wilson?
Who at Worldwide and/or Wilson should be contacted?
(note:
these issues are unresolved from last year; there was confusion about
them again this year)
3. Notification of awards
Currently, there are two
separate calendar entries on the AWS for notification of winners:
one in November 4 for H.W. Wilson and
January 6 for Worldwide. Since
the committee deliberates on these awards at the same time (the end of October)
it would be more efficient to move the Worldwide date up to November 4 as well.
Notification of donors and of award winners should then follow in a way
the EB sees fit. A couple other
questions left over from last year’s report:
What information does headquarters need to issue the winners’ checks?
Who determines if the donors are sending representatives to the Convocation to present the awards?
B. Encouraging members to report scholarship and pursue research projects
Perhaps the Executive Board could use their influence to help get the word out to the membership. For instance, when Regional Representatives attend Chapter meetings perhaps they could explain the Research Awards and encourage members to apply. (This item also a continuation from last year—try as we might to publicize and encourage applications, the applicant pools are usually pretty small).
