Members of the Distinguished Service Award Committee:

Rosemary Haddad, Chair
Susan M. Allen
Barbara Polowy
Stephen Van Dyk

Following established guidelines, the Committee began its work by soliciting nominations at the ARLIS/NA annual conference in St. Louis in March 2002. During the Annual Membership Meeting, the Committee introduced itself, presented a brief description of the award, encouraged nominations, pointed to guidelines for preparing these, and announced the submission deadline of Friday 13 September 2002.

A budget for expenses relating to the award was sent to the ARLIS/NA Treasurer on 16 April.  A call for nominations was published in the June issue of Update, and other calls and reminders were posted on ARLIS-L on 12 June and 21 August.

Two outstanding nominations were received at ARLIS/NA headquarters and forwarded to the Chair for distribution to the Committee. On Friday 29 November the Committee completed its deliberations and the results were forwarded to ARLIS/NA President Daniel Starr, who had the pleasure of notifying the award recipient, Nancy Allen. Once this contact had been made, the Chair of the Committee duly notified the principal nominators of both the award recipient and the unsuccessful nomination. Arrangements for presentation of the award as part of the convocation program were made by Daniel Starr.

Meanwhile there had been some online correspondence among Board members and others concerning more visibility for DSA recipients, and ultimately it was agreed that, with the permission of the recipients, their acceptance speeches could be posted on the ARLIS/NA website and published in Update for the benefit of all members. Last year’s recipient, B.J. Irvine, as well as this year’s, agreed to the posting of their remarks.

Thanks are due to ARLIS/NA President and Board Liaison Daniel Starr, as well as to Ted Goodman and Milan Hughston, for their guidance; thanks are extended also to the three members of the Committee for their sincere efforts and hard work; and to the nominators and supporters for theirs. A warm welcome is extended to the incoming chair, Jeannette Dixon.

Respectfully submitted,
Rosemary Haddad
