Per
the committee’s guidelines as established in the ARLIS/NA Policies and
Procedures Manual, we began our work soliciting nominations for the DSA at the
Los Angeles conference in March 2001. This
entailed making an announcement at the annual membership meeting which allowed
us to introduce ourselves to the members. A
brief description of the award was read followed by the announced deadline for
nominations of September 14, 2001.
A
further call for nominations was posted on ARLIS-L on June 5, 2001 and in the
August 2001 issue of Update (no. 4).
Due
to the events of September 11, 2001, a decision was made to extend the deadline
until the end of September. Unlike
the previous year, the Committee was in receipt of three outstanding
nominations. The packets received
at ARLIS/NA headquarters were forwarded to the Chair for distribution to the
Committee.
On
December 6, 2001 the DSA Committee held a conference call to discuss the
nominations. A unanimous vote
resulted in the award being given to Betty Jo Irvine.
The Committee determined that her nomination packet made the most
convincing case for her candidacy.
This
news was shared with ARLIS/NA President Ted Goodman, who notified the ARLIS/NA
Executive Board on December 17, 2001, reminding them to keep it confidential
until the St. Louis conference. Ted
emailed Betty Jo Irvine on December 18, 2001.
She was travelling in Thailand, but conveyed her warm thanks and
appreciation when she picked up the email a few days later.
As
per the Committee guidelines, Ted Goodman as President is charged with making
arrangements for the DSA’s presentation as part of the convocation program.
I
want to convey my thanks to board liaison Karen McKenzie and ARLIS/NA President
Ted Goodman for their support in my two-year chairmanship.
My committee is also to be thanked for agreeing to serve an additional
year. I am pleased to announce that
Rosemary Haddad has agreed to take over as chair at the St. Louis conference.
Respectfully
submitted,
Milan
