Narrative

The chapter’s spring 2000 meeting was held May 5-6 at the Kohler Art Library, University of Wisconsin- Madison and hosted by Lyn Korenic and Bill Bunce. Once again, this was a joint meeting between ARLIS/Midstates and the VRA Midwest Chapter. The program featured a number of interesting activities, including a guided tour of "Beads Body and Soul: Art and Life in the Yoruba Universe" with exhibition co-curator Professor Henry Drewal at the Elvehjem Museum of Art, a tour of the newly restored State Capitol building, Betty Jo Irvine’s presentation on art libraries in China and a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin.

Ursula Kolmstetter hosted the fall meeting at the Indianapolis Museum of Art on October 13-14. Five new members attended the meeting, bringing the membership tally to more than thirty. This meeting was an exceptional opportunity for the Midstates and VRA Midwest members to participate in two events:

a) the Workshop on Using Standards and Vocabularies for Indexing and Retrieval presented by Patricia Harpring, managing editor, and Robin Johnson, editor, of the Getty Vocabulary Program; and

b) the exhibition "Crossroads of American Sculpture: David Smith, George Rickey, Robert Indiana,

William Wiley, Bruce Nauman" and the Contemporary Sculpture Symposium with keynote speaker Michael Kimmelman of The New York Times.

The question of a regional meeting with ARLIS/Twin Cities and ARLIS/Michigan was discussed in May and October. Planning is now underway for fall 2001, coordinated by Rebecca Moss (Twin Cities), Sonja Staum-Kuniej (Midstates) and Mary Galvin (Michigan), with the location to be determined.

Members responded to an appeal on ARLIS-L for book donations to Kosovo art libraries by adopting it as a chapter project at the October meeting. Several people volunteered to collect material in their institutions, with Jane Devine as coordinator of the shipment.

Issues for the Executive Board

The Chapter voted a $400 contribution to support the Los Angeles welcome party.
