The Call for Submissions was sent to 325 publishers along with the selection guidelines, a cover letter for submissions and a form for address updates. The call was also submitted to Update, ARLIS-L and several other listservs. A statement was inserted into the call requesting that publishers contact the chair to make alternate arrangements for review copies if it was a hardship to send them; no calls were received on that topic. The call was not translated into French or Spanish.
Of the 325 envelopes mailed, 42 were returned for incorrect address, unable to forward. (14 will require further research, 25 can be updated from new information; 3 had the same address listed in BIP) Of the address update forms that were mailed, 22 publishers responded with updated information and/or email addresses for the call to be sent to next year. This information will be compiled and passed on to Sheila Klos, Chair 2002.
The committee received 114 submissions from approximately 53 nominating institutions as follows:
1 ViewMaster and c. 1999, disqualified
6 additional 1999 publications, disqualified
1 publication c. 2001, disqualified
106 qualified submissions (1 Electronic)
The submissions that qualified by publication date were then reviewed for inclusion of scholarly apparatus. Those that included at least an index or bibliography and/or had appropriate format points were selected for further review by the committee. The committee is in the process of reviewing 29 titles for content, originality and scholarly excellence.
The committee met on January 12, 2001 to review all submitted titles and disseminate books for review. We will meet again on February 23, 2001. Remaining duties will be completed before the conference and an update will be submitted to the Chair at the business meeting on March 30. The Wittenborn awards will be announced at the convocation of the annual conference in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 1, 2001.
The new chair has been selected and is Sheila Klos of Dumbarton Oaks. The budget for Fiscal Year 2001 was approved in the amount of $650.00.
