ARTstor Announces Travel Award Program
The ARTstor Travel Awards program will provide five research travel awards in the amount of $1,500 each to support educational and scholarly activities. The awards have been established to recognize the importance of engaging with original works and sites, conducting onsite research in archives that hold primary source material, or attending conferences with colleagues engaged with similar issues. ARTstor will provide five research travel awards in the amount of $1,500 each (to be used by September 1, 2011) to help support the educational and scholarly activities of graduate students, scholars, curators, educators, and librarians in any field in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences.
To be considered for a research travel award, applicants must create and submit an ARTstor image group (or a series of image groups) and a single accompanying essay that creatively and compellingly demonstrates why the image group(s) is useful for teaching, research, or scholarship. The five winning submissions will be determined by ARTstor staff. These submissions will help ARTstor to understand better the uses that scholars and teachers are making of ARTstor's content and tools, and will provide us with insights into how we can continue to improve our efforts to serve the educational community. William J. Dane to Retire from Newark Public Library
William J. Dane, the keeper of prints, posters, and works of art on paper at the Newark Public Library, is retiring at the end of December. Dane plans to mark his retirement by delivering the John Cotton Dana Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday, December 9, at 6 p.m. in the Main Library's Centennial Hall.
Dane began his career at the library in 1947, after serving in the Second World War. Under Dane's stewardship, the library's Special Collections Division has thrived, and today boasts of more than 23,000 fine prints and photographs, 5,000 posters, and 1,000 rare books. The collection includes works by Rembrandt, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Kandinsky, Picasso, Matisse and Miro. Dane expanded the collections by including unique artists' books, commercially produced pop-up books, and even shopping bags.
Dane has curated more than 300 exhibitions at the library, including such major displays as "A Salute to the Society of American Graphic Arts: 1915-1994," "Hidden Treasures of Japanese Art," and "The World in Prints."
He is a board member of the Victorian Society in America, sits on the advisory board of the Printmaking Council of New Jersey, and is a member of the Grolier Club, as well as the Art Libraries Society of North America. Dane is also listed in Who's Who in American Art.
Dane said he plans to spend his retirement traveling and visiting museums and galleries. His first stop will be Puerto Rico in February where he has vacationed annually for the last 50 years. For additional information, see the Newark Public Library press release. (12/1/09)
The Transitions
Motivated by the unfortunately-growing number of ARLIS/NA and Visual Resources Association (VRA) members who recently have been either laid off or forced into retirement because of current harsh economic times, Maureen Burns, Leigh Gates, and Margaret Webster have established both a Google Group and a related LinkedIn Group named "The Transitions" to provide a forum for visual resource or art library professionals who, for whatever reason, are in transition in their careers. The Google Group will provide a private environment while the contents of the LinkedIn Group will be publicly visible to anyone who wishes to access it. The hope is that these sites will be used to discuss issues of concern, share experiences, post documents of interest, keep in touch with professional colleagues, and to gain access to relevant resources. It is anticipated that these groups will develop organically and take shape in ways which will provide practical career management information and emotional support to those who choose to join.
Initially posted on the Google Group site is an Online Resources page where useful links are listed for job searching, volunteer opportunities, and networking. Also posted are some professional opportunities which had not appeared on ARLIS_L or VRA_L and an ongoing discussion of what make an effective curriculum vitae or resume.
Both the ARLIS/NA and VRA executive boards have agreed to support these efforts, and a web presence and an open invitation to join should appear soon on their respective web sites. After the initial invitation to members of both organizations was made in early August, over 20 people joined The Transitions. These members included those who have retired, been laid off, or are actively searching for professional or volunteer positions. It is hoped that participation in these groups will encourage those who, for whatever reason, are going through a career transition to remain active and vital within their profession. As a group member one will be able to engage in discussions, add and edit documents, invite new members, and connect with colleagues.
In order to preserve membership privacy, it is asked that anyone interested in joining the Google Group inquire directly to Maureen Burns, Leigh Gates, or Margaret Webster. It is hoped that ARLIS/NA and VRA members will spread the word to both former and current colleagues who might benefit from participation. (11/30/09)

New Online Publication on Best Practices in Cataloging Exhibition Publications
Cataloging Exhibition Publications: Best Practices: SUBJECTS was written and compiled by Lynda Bunting, Sherman Clarke, Marly Helm, S. Isidor Justeson, Elizabeth Lilker, Elizabeth O'Keefe, Sarah Quimby, Daniel Starr, Lori Van Deman.
This new Online Publication provides invaluable insights into cataloging subject heading fields for exhibition catalogs--illuminating the particular issues and challenges associated with these 6xx fields, including meeting names, named works of art, and the use of genre terms. This publication of best practices, created by the ARLIS/NA Cataloging Advisory Committee is devoted to providing practical guidance to catalogers working with art exhibition publications. These guidelines are intended to be used in conjunction with other cataloging documentation, including Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2nd edition, 2002 revision (AACR2), and its successor, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRI), and MARC21.
The cataloging of exhibition publications poses unique challenges to new and experienced catalogers alike. These types of publications often require more use of a cataloger's judgment, and more intervention in terms of transposing, omitting, and supplying data. Decision-making about the choice of a primary access point can be quite involved, and local practices and guidelines greatly affect how an exhibition publication is cataloged.
This new online publication is the third devoted to providing best practice guidelines for cataloging exhibition catalogs. The first two in the series are:

From the President
January 13 2010:
Dear Members,
I hope that you all had wonderful restful holidays and are now coping with whatever winter happens to bring your way--in the northeast that happens to be lots of COLD air. But thoughts of the upcoming baseball season (the countdown for pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training has begun) and our annual conference to be held in Boston in April will help us make it through.
I hope that you have all had a chance to peruse the preliminary program for the Boston conference. There seems to be something for everyone--thought-provoking sessions, timely workshops, and tours galore. Boston is a top-rate city, offering a huge variety of restaurants, bars, museums, and an easy to navigate public transportation system. I truly believe this is going to be one of our best events yet!

Division News
- Art & Design School Division
New Blog
There is some very exciting news for our division. Many of us have been waiting a long time for this, but at long last, thanks to the efforts of our co-moderators, Claudia Covert and Laura Haxon, we now have an Art and Design School Library Division blog. Although up and running, the blog is still a work in progress, undergoing some final tweaking. It is hoped that the blog will be accessible through the ARLIS/NA homepage in the near future. Please take a few minutes to look at the blog--it's going to be a wonderful source of ongoing dialogue and more. Let your voices be heard! Thank you Claudia and Laura! (4/24/08)
Member Success Story
In a recent posting to ARLIS-L, I had asked if any Division members had a success story to share. I received a response from Jill Luedke, reference/instruction librarian at the Adam & Sophie Gimbel Design Library at Parsons, The New School for Design, which I think might be of interest to several of our division members. Enticing students to come into the library and use our resources seems to be an ever growing challenge. Jill and one of her colleagues have initiated a fun and creative way to highlight their collection and draw people in using a simple but effective tool--a button making machine. The colorful graphic imagery is created from one inch snippets taken from color photocopies made from books in the collection. The button project was started a year ago, initially as a promotional tool for Fall orientations for students and faculty. It quickly became a huge hit, with now "collectible" status. Following this success, the buttons are now being used as instructional tools and incentives for students to actively participate in library instruction sessions (those who contribute in discussions or brainstorming are rewarded with a button). The buttons have also been used effectively as a way to help summer English as a Second Language students understand call numbers and navigate the collection. Each student was given a "button card" on which was written a citation, call number, and brief description of a book in the collection. Attached to the card was a button with an image taken from the individual book to be searched and found which the students kept as their reward. The books selected were all related to the student's course work or final projects, and thus had relevance beyond the basic lesson of how to find material on the shelves. It seems as though the buttons have endless potential. Looking at the image Jill sent me of a table filled with colorful buttons, I can easily see why these are collectibles...I would have a very hard time choosing among them! What a perfect reward for an art and design oriented user and a clever way to entice people to come back and explore. (4/24/08)

Round Table News
- Women and Art Round Table
The Women and Art Round Table Wikipedia Project
Several members of the Women and Art Roundtable (WomART) have noticed that coverage of the history of women's art in Wikipedia is poor. Major artists do not have entries, and entries that do exist need editing and additional bibliographic citations to make them more viable. Despite the recent uproar in some academic libraries over the validity of Wikipedia as a research tool, it is widely used by researchers from a variety of backgrounds. Wikipedia is the ninth most widely used Web site in the world, and receives more hits than CNN on a daily basis in the United States.
WomART members have decided to "join them," rather than "beat them," by adding authentic content to the database. To this end, several members of WomART have agreed to either create or edit at least three entries in Wikipedia this year. Instead of building static bibliographies on the history of women's art, we will create hyperlinked, dynamic content. This is a small attempt on our part to push content out beyond the barriers of the art library, to engage a larger audience, and to raise awareness during this important year in women's art. We will present our findings at ARLIS/NA's 2008 annual conference. We encourage other members of ARLIS/NA to take up the cause, seek out entries on art topics, and contribute! At the present time, the Wikipedia entry for ARLIS/NA needs additional content. Alternately, there are no entries for "Art Libraries" or "Art Librarianship."
