Mountain West Chapter NewsSubmitted by Marilyn Russell / posted: 16 December 2005The combined ARLIS/Mountain West and ARLIS/Central Plains conference was held from October 27 to October 30 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. There were over fifty-five people in attendance. The conference was a big success and everyone enjoyed it immensely. Information about the conference is still available at the conference Web site. Highlights of the conference included an opening session, workshops, and a keynote speaker. The opening session, "How do Museums and Library Collections Contribute to Native American Research and Artwork?" included panelists Hartman Lomawaima, director, Arizona State Museum, Arizona State University; Mary Graham, head librarian at the Arizona State Museum, Arizona State University; and Ramona Sakiestewa, Hopi artist and scholar. Workshops included "Managing Time, Money, and Quality at Your Library" presented by Pat Wagner, Library Administration and Management Association/American Library Association Regional Institute trainer for project management, and "Cataloging First Aid: All You Need to Know to Make Cataloging Work" presented by Daniel Starr, manager of bibliographic operations, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Kay Teel, catalog librarian, Stanford University. The keynote speaker was Barbara Buhler Lynes, curator at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and the Emily Fisher Landau Director, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Research Center. Bob Haozous spoke about his retrospective art exhibit at the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum. Other speakers were Mikael Kriz of the Central Plains chapter; and David Sume, Allison Colborne, and Jennifer Parker, all from the Mountain West chapter. Saturday tours at Museum Hill included the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. There were also receptions at the Gerald Peters Gallery, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and the Museum of International Folk Art. The conference was co-chaired by Marilyn Russell, Institute of American Indian Arts, and Eumie Imm-Stroukoff, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Top of Page |
