Fall Business Meeting, October 29, 2004:
The ARLIS/SC fall business meeting at the Getty Research Institute was well attended, with thirty-five members and guests. The meeting started with introductions, followed by announcements of upcoming events. Agenda items included a discussion of adding a member directory to the chapter web site, recruiting members to run for open treasurer and vice-chair board member positions, discussion of possible venues for the spring chapter meeting, and next year's joint meeting in the San Francisco area with the Northern California chapter. For the majority of the meeting the group discussed the Artists' Book Conference the chapter is planning for next year. The conference will take place May 21-24, 2005, and feature speakers, panel discussions, and workshops by librarians, collectors, conservators, curators, and artists that work with artists' books. A planning committee for the conference was formed during the meeting.

Following the meeting, Joyce Pellerano Ludmer led a lively roundtable discussion on collection development policies of artists' books. Joyce shared the collection development policy that she has developed for the Getty Research Institute and others described how they collect artists' books, most admittedly without a written policy. After discussion the group moved to a viewing area where Joyce presented a special selection of recent acquisitions to GRI's collection. Members enjoyed looking through the books while Joyce provided interesting descriptions of each piece.

ARLIS/SC 30th Anniversary Party:
On Saturday, October 30, 2004, ARLIS Southern California members, both past and present gathered in Santa Monica at the art-filled home of Joan Benedetti to celebrate its thirty-something anniversary and to recognize its founder and long-time Southern California resident Judith A. Hoffberg by naming the travel award in her honor.

The afternoon began at 2 with a light buffet, wine, and soft drinks, followed by a welcome and recognition of founding members and past chapter officers, by Joan Benedetti. Joyce Pellerano Ludmer summarized the history of ARLIS/NA during the formative years 1972-1977, elucidating the role of Judy Hoffberg. Amy Ciccone presented Judy with her award certificate and Judy made a heartfelt speech. The current chapter Executive Board was represented by Nancy Norris and Trish Rose, who expressed the board's thanks to Judy and to all the past officers who have led the way. The board then surprised Joan Benedetti with a lifetime chapter membership award in honor of her significant service to ARLIS/Southern California.

Cake and coffee and much good cheer followed. Within the next few weeks, we will be enhancing the chapter web site with a list of all past chapter officers, compiled by Amy Ciccone, a short biography of Judy Hoffberg, and a brief chapter history as well as photographs from the party. For photographs of the party, please go to the ARLIS/SC website at www.arlis-sc.org.
