Gay & Lesbian Interests Round Table Business Meeting

Sun. Mar. 23

Chaired and reported by Roberto Ferrari, Incoming GLIRT Moderator

17 people in attendance

The meeting was convened by Roberto Ferrari at a fabulous luncheon meeting at the Lord Baltimore Grille in the historic Lord Baltimore Hotel and all were pleased to be able to do something different, i.e. meet at lunchtime instead of at 8am as we had in the past.

Ted Goodman, our Executive Board liaison, did not have anything new to report from the Board, although we did need to discuss the status of the round table (along with divisions and sections).  He also reminded us about the New York conference next year, to be held April 1-6, 2004.  (It is uncertain who our next Board Liaison will be now that Ted is off the Board.)

Allen Townsend and Daniel Starr had asked via the ARLIS listserv to initiate discussion over the continued existence of DSRTs.  The overall perception was that GLIRT's existence as a round table, while partially social, also served as an organized way of grouping those of us with interests in gay & lesbian-related art topics.  Our website and listserv assist in this, and we should make it our goal to rejuvenate these two means of communication to enhance this purpose.

The website is currently out of commission because the host institution could no longer host it.  I will be contacting Jim Viskochil, our former webmaster, about his interest in continuing this effort and/or looking for input from others about the website in the coming month or so.

Eric Schwab reported that the listerv is running smoothly and if you would like to be added to contact him (ecs13@cornell.edu).  As of March 14th, there are 29 subscribers to the listserv.  It was suggested that the GLIRT listserv could have additional information forwarded to it regularly by those on the QUEERART listserv hosted at NYU, as some of this information may be of interest.

The deadline for program ideas for the 2004 ARLIS/NA conference is May 5th.  I am working on submitting an idea regarding queer art from an artist's, art historian's, and archivist/librarian/curator's point of view.  Sherman Clarke, Ted Goodman, and Miguel Juarez have offered to assist me in this session idea.  Other ideas that came up were to host the session off-site at the Gay & Lesbian Community Center and to have the business meeting at the home of a New York GLIRT member for a happy hour (Milan Hughston was courageous and gracious enough to volunteer, but we won't commit him to it yet until he thinks about it a little more).

There was a general call for the election/selection of a new vice-chair but while a few names were brought up, no one was willing to agree, so we decided to hold off on this for now.  But I will be looking for someone...
