ARLIS/NA Collection Development Committee Meeting Minutes, Saturday, March 7, 1998 Present: Mary Clare Altenhofen, Adeane Bregman, Paula Gabbard, Thomas Hill, Katie Keller, Pamela Krupanski, Roger Lawson (E.B. Liaison), Barbara Reed, Chris Sala, Timothy Shipe, Carol Terry, Ann Whiteside (Chair). The committee met to discuss on-going projects and session ideas for the 1999 conference in Vancouver. Collection Development Policy Statements – Bregman, Krupanski and Whiteside have solicited libraries (academic, architecture, art & design school, museum and public) for policies to be used in a compilation as samples. They have received seven or eight policies so far. Surveys will go out to those send policies. The surveys will ask for contextual information such as collection size, staffing, budget, etc. The committee was asked for opinions of the usefulness of a web-based publication or a print publication. It was decided that an introduction, the policies and some appendices will be published as an occasional paper. A web site will be developed with the introductory material and appendices. Policies that are already on the web will be pointed to from this site. Krupanski offered to host the site, which can also be linked to the Collection Development Committee web page. Collection Development Standards – Whiteside reported that the sub-committee working on this has three portions of the 1983 standards in draft format. The sub-committee had a scheduled meeting for the next day, where further work would be assigned and deadlines set. Web page – Altenhofen spoke about her efforts to create a core art periodicals list for the web site. She is seeking permission to use the list in the revised edition of Arntzen and Rainwater. It was suggested that a web page be set up for this list and that the list could be interactive, allowing users of the web page to add comments and annotations to the list. Altenhofen will be working on the list and offered to set up the web page. O.P. Dealer's Directory – Barbara Reed has asked to be relieved of leading this effort and discussion centered around how to re-focus the project. It was decided that the Directory will be a web-based "publication", with links to vendor's web sites as appropriate. The consensus of the committee was that there is not much to be gained from charging vendors to advertise on the ARLIS Dealer's web site. Data will be gathered from members of the committee and other interested parties. Paula Gabbard and Thomas Hill will work on this project. Session ideas for Vancouver conference: an AskARLIS session on storage issues, overcrowded libraries. Ask for people to speak briefly on issues such as the "Harvard model", what works for storage, what does not, issues around storing visual materials. Mary Clare Altenhofen agreed to speak on the "Harvard model", Barbara Reed agreed to speak as someone who has stored material and will get it back. Carol Terry may speak. Paula Gabbard offered to write the proposal. an AskARLIS session on electronic resources. This will be a re-working of the proposal submitted by Tim Shipe last year. The focus of the session will be narrowed down and will include the aspect of constortial electronic resources. Note: since the conference, the Serials Roundtable has approached us with a proposal to join this session with a portion on electronic journals. Tim Shipe will work on the proposal. an AskARLIS on gifts and exchanges (this stems from Strategic Plan item number 81). The session could include the museum library and the academic library perspectives. Issues to cover include trends, gift refusal, disposal of materials. We would like to co-sponsor this with the Museum Library Division. Katie Keller will approach the Museum Division about co-sponsorship and will write the proposal. NOTE: All session proposals are due May 31st. Ann Whiteside Harvard Graduate School of Design -- Ann Whiteside Visual Resources Librarian Harvard Graduate School of Design awhiteside@gsd.harvard.edu
