Cataloging Section Monday p.m., March 9, 1998 Cataloging Section moderator, Kay Teel led the meeting. She introduced Patricia Siska as the incoming moderator and Liping Song as the session recorder. Kay thanked everyone for their involvement and hard work, particularyly the following members for organizing the sessions sponsored by the Cataloging Section: Elisa Lanzi for Session 2, "Collection level records: archivists and librarians share solutions" and VRA session, "The cultural commune," which had also been submitted to ARLIS with Section sponsorship; Daniel Staar for Ask ARLIS 1, "Cataloging and indexing in an ideal world;" Elizabethe O'Keefe for Session 9, "Intellectual access to information;" Sherman Clarke for the Cataloging Problems Discussion Group and his continuing hard work with ArtNACO. Daniel Starr, chair of the Cataloging Advisory Committee, reported on recent CAC activities: 1) draft of a proposal for establishing unnamed works of art; 2) proposal to create a new MARC subfield for qualifiers such as "Follower of," "Pupil of." Elizabeth O'Keeffe has done a lot of work on the 2nd proposal. Daniel hoped the proposal would be ready for the ALA conference in Washington in June. Once things get to the proposal stage, we will try to post the papers to ARLIS-L with subject "CAC" so that anyone interested can see it and contribute to the discussion . One successful way of getting feedback is to have discussion take place at local cataloging discussion groups, such as the Southern California and New York City groups, and anywhere catalogers get together to discuss cataloging issues. He also gave an update of the LC's response to the subdivision --xBiography. We have been pushing to have broader use of the list of subdivisions authorized after literary names, i.e. to have them used after artist's names. A primary candidate is --xBiography. LC's recent response was 3 to 1 against the use of this subdivion. Daniel enouraged proposals for next year. Kay brought attention to the Section webpage (http://w3.arizona.edu/~arlis/). She expressed thanks to Madelyn Cook for co-chairing the page and the University of Arizona for hosting and maintaining the site. Submission and suggestion are encouraged. Kay talked about the Database Authority Working Group's work to clean up the Membership Directory's Index by Institution. This group was formed under Strategic Plan Action List item 114. The final list was submitted to Headquarters in early July. She thanked the working group members for their hard work: Linda Andrews, Madelyn Cook, Linda Cuccurullo, Marilyn Czierniejewski, Emily Roth, Liping Song, Annette Weir, and Lynda White. The meeting moved on to New Business: 1) ARLIS/NA formed a Strategic Task Force. Kay volunteered to represent the Cataloging Section; 2) Liping Song was approved to serve as Vice-Moderator/Moderator-Elect of the Section; 3) Several proposal ideas for the 1999 conference in Vancouver were presented. The proposal ideas include the following: a) Martha Childers recommended a possible speaker who has spoken on several occassions and received very positive response. Details such as format of the session, topics, etc. are to be worked out later. Martha Childers will work on this proposal; b) Alison Dickey expressed interest in a session exploring the history of book, image, and object cataloging and periodical indexing--how they affect the present, how we are to carry them into the future; c) Daniel Starr suggested resubmitting the proposal rejected last year, i.e. Evalyn Stone's proposal on electronic publication. Session adjourned to allow more time for Cataloging Problems Discussion Group since Bob Hiatt from LC would join the group for questions, suggestions, and answers.
