The University Libraries seek a dynamic, innovative person for a new position with the primary responsibility of providing leadership and strategic direction for Special Collections within the broader context of the Libraries' plans and goals. The team processes rare book and manuscript materials; provides instruction and advanced reference related to the collections; implements digital initiatives; promotes collection use through exhibits, programs and publications; identifies and obtains important new collections; and identifies and cultivates donors in collaboration with the Libraries' Development Office. The director will spend 35% of time on the latter two activities. The director will also be a member of the Libraries Cabinet (policy and management team).
The director manages the work of 5 librarians, 3.5 FTE staff and several graduate students, and will be responsible for ensuring that team planning follows library process and appropriate quality standards are identified and met, and coach and guide team librarians through the promotion and continuing status process.
UA Special Collections is home to one of the nation's finest collections of printed texts on Arizona and U.S./Mexico Borderlands. The Collections maintain rare books, archival materials, manuscripts and historical photographs as well as newly acquired collections including Heiko A. Oberman research library, Henry F. Dobyns ethnohistory and applied anthropology library, and American Museum of Vaudeville and Up with People archives. Requirements: Master's degree in library/information science from ALA-accredited institution; substantial leadership and management experience in academic library environment (such as special collections, arts libraries, etc.); successful record of fundraising experience, including donor cultivation; active scholarship and professional service sufficient for appointment at least at Associate Librarian level.
Desirable Qualifications: Familiarity with cataloging and descriptive standards for special collections material; demonstrated understanding of and experience with team-based management; knowledge of accepted preservation methods applied to archival collections; demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse people; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated success in grant writing; familiarity with digital collection initiatives; successful project management experience.
