Special Collections Manager
Library – John M. Flaxman
THE SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO is seeking a candidate who supports the curatorial, technical, and instructional functions of the Flaxman Library’s Special Collections program, and of the Special Collections Librarian. In the absence of the Special Collections Librarian, assumes responsibility for daily operations, including: management of facilities and of student and volunteer staff; care of valuable collections (both physical and digital); and interactions with students, faculty, staff, researchers, and the general public. Assists with the organization and processing of unique and irreplaceable collections and materials, in a high-use educational environment. Contributes to digital library and cataloging projects. Other duties as assigned. Evening and weekend hours are required.
A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE a Bachelors degree in the arts or a related field. Graduate degree preferred. Experience working in libraries, special collections, archives, or digital libraries. In-depth knowledge of contemporary art and of artists publishing endeavors in all formats. Basic understanding of preservation principles and handling for works of art and archival materials. Experience with widely-used library systems and software (such as OCLC, CONTENT dm, Voyager, or others) preferred. Proficiency with standard office technologies, including hardware and software. Must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
