The Frances Loeb Library at the Harvard Graduate School of Design seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented librarian who is responsible for the overall management of the library’s collections, resource sharing, and access to library content. The Librarian for Collection Resources and Access leads library staff in the planning and coordination of a variety of initiatives related to collaborative collection building, collection maintenance, resource sharing, document delivery, and access services. She/he monitors trends in these same areas. Coordination efforts include: selection, acquisition, cataloging; analysis of and the building of collections including electronic resources about architecture, landscape architecture urban planning/design, and related disciplines; approval plan monitoring; oversight of Special Collections and Visual Resources content development; leading cooperative collection development activities including negotiations of group purchases with Harvard library units and other institutions; overseeing quality of cataloging, utilizing Harvard’s implementation of the Aleph automated library system ; oversight of the library’s acquisitions budget; designing a program for on-site and off-site management of content; position may have oversight of circulation, reserves, and ILL services.
The incumbent tracks issues surrounding scholarly communication and works with other Harvard librarians to communicate these issues within the Library and to GSD faculty. In consultation with the Head of the library and other managers, develops policy pertaining to collection development, acquisitions, access services, and resource sharing; determines strategic direction for the collections, establishes goals, and encourages and tracks goal progress. Is a member of the library’s management team and contributes to the overall planning and management of the library. Hires, trains, and supervises a staff of both professional librarians and library assistants; works collaboratively with all areas of the library to ensure high quality services.
Requirements/Qualifications:
ALA-accredited library degree (MLS) or equivalent required. 3-6 years of progressively responsible management experience in a collections environment required. Reading knowledge of at least one European language required. Creativity, flexibility and versatility required in order to effectively contribute to an evolving work environment required. Leadership, managerial, mentoring and organizational skills, with excellent written and oral communication ability required. Collections background in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning/design or a closely related field preferred. Commitment to work collegially in a team environment required. Understanding of cataloging and acquisitions processes required. Competency in an electronic environment required; Proficiency and skill in an electronic environment required. Analysis and assessment skills required.
