Collection Development and Cataloging Librarian for Russian and Other European Languages
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Thomas J. Watson Library seeks a librarian for selection and cataloging of research material in all formats in Russian and other European languages. This person will join a team of selectors and catalogers responsible for building the library’s incomparable collection. This position also takes an active role in reader services as a member of teams responsible for reference and instruction.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Selects, orders, and catalogs art historical research material in all formats in Russian, Slavic and other European languages; maintains and develops relations with booksellers and other vendors for print, online, and special collections material; identifies material for digitization and participates in this process. Provides reference service and participates in instructional programs. Occasional weekend work will be required.
REQUIREMENTS:
MLS from an accredited program; knowledge of Russian required and knowledge of other European languages desirable; knowledge of MARC formats, Library of Congress subject headings and classification; awareness of current trends in technical services and collection development. Interest and background in art history, B.A. or M.A. preferred.
Experience in a professional position in a museum or academic library -- collection development and cataloging experience preferred; public service experience including reference and instruction; demonstrated organizational and management skills; strong interpersonal and oral and written communications skills; ability and willingness to fully participate in a team-based environment that encourages collaboration, initiative and innovation. Rank will be dependent on experience and skills.
This is an opportunity for a librarian to engage in a broad range of library roles and responsibilities that encompass collection development, cataloging, digitization, reference and instruction. It is understood that a candidate may not have experience in all these areas, but the successful candidate will be fluent in Russian, will have experience in some aspects of the position and will have an interest in and aptitude for developing a broad set of library skills.
Thomas J. Watson Library is the research library of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its collection of more than 800,000 titles, representing the encyclopedic scope of the Museum, is one of the most comprehensive in the world. There is a staff of 41. Approximately 20,000 books were added to the collection last year. While there is a strong commitment to maintain the distinction of printed publications, the library is steadily acquiring a broad range of online resources. There is also an active digitization program.
