Research and Instruction Librarian - Pratt Institute

Position Summary:
The Pratt Institute Library, Brooklyn, New York, seeks an innovative and knowledgeable reference librarian to join its collegial, service-oriented staff. The Reference and Instruction Librarian provides high-quality public services in subject areas related to Pratt’s liberal arts and sciences. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to collection development in English, Film Studies, and Theatre, instruction, committee and task force work within and outside the Library, and such other activities as are deemed necessary for the smooth provision of information services. The incumbent must have a commitment to professional development and the ability to meet the requirements of promotion and tenure.

Job Duties:

This full-time, tenure-track position assumes responsibility for reference services, instruction, and acts as liaison to programs in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Pratt Institute librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision making environment.

The duties and responsibilities of the successful candidate are to:
  • Provide leadership in the planning, design and provision of library instructional, reference (some evening hours), and public access services, including the production and revision of library guides;
  • Work collaboratively with library faculty in developing for-credit courses addressing information literacy and research skills;
  • Provide individual and group library instruction; instruction may also include teaching library credit courses and course-related information literacy campus wide
  • Serve as a liaison to the instructional faculty by developing and maintaining appropriate departmental contacts to identify reserve items and materials to be added to the collection, and assist with incorporating informational resources into the curriculum;
  • Oversee special and ongoing projects related to the maintenance and integrity of the liberal arts and humanities collections;
  • Participate in training of clerical staff, student assistants and graduate assistants and monitor their workflow;
  • Contribute to the library’s public relations efforts;
  • Participate in grant writing and seeking outside funding sources for the libraries;
  • Participate in library and institutional committees and other activities as appropriate;
Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education & Experience: ALA accredited MLS; academic background in liberal arts and/or humanities required; experience in providing library public services in an academic context; experience in providing library related instruction and experience with online systems required.

Other: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills essential, as well as the ability to work effectively and patiently with a culturally diverse population. The successful candidate will be flexible, enthusiastic to learn, creative, and willing to embrace change. Professional contributions beyond the primary job, e.g., publications, active participation in the Institute and professional organizations, and other research and creative activity are required for reappointment, promotion and tenure. Candidates must show evidence or promise of such contribution.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate degree or graduate-level academic preparation in English, Social Science, or other Humanities discipline; one to two years of relevant experience in an academic library.
