 Barbara Rominski:
West Regional Representative/
Communications Liaison
Having just stepped down as Chair of our local chapter (ARLIS/NA NC) and having negotiated the signing of the Affiliation Agreement for this group, I can honestly say that I have had an insightful couple of years regarding ARLIS/NA and its relationships with the regional chapters!
I personally derive a great deal of professional value and pleasure from being both a chapter and a society member; I recognize the need for both and sense the potential for enhanced synergies between the groups. It was, however, clear to me -- from the beginning conversations with my chapter regarding its relationship to ARLIS/NA to the end vote of 17 to 16 in favor of signing the agreement -- that the relationships between the Society and the Chapters, as well as their value (both perceived and real) to each other, need work.
As Western Regional Representative, I would aim to strengthen these relationships by:
- expanding the dialogue between Chapters and the Society,
- encouraging a closer working relationship to greater mutual benefit,
- and, educating both groups on the value of their ongoing association.
ARLIS/NA is an organization in flux; yet it is taking positive steps towards reorganizing itself in order to better meet the needs of its membership and the profession. Whether the Regional Representative positions are kept or converted to functional roles, the current and newly nominated members of the board face the enormous undertaking of change management within a group that is known for having varied and outspoken opinions. Were I to be chosen as Rep, it would be a pleasure to be a part of this challenging yet important time in ARLIS/NA?s evolution.
