Membership & Communications

The ARLIS Ontario Chapter has maintained a healthy membership of over fifty members.  The group has actively facilitated communication between member institutions through:

• a bi-annual newsletter, ARLIS ON, which is distributed as a PDF document to all Ontario Chapter members.  Daniel Payne formats and edits the publication
• maintaining a strong web presence.  Mary Kandiuk assumed responsibility for updates and modifications of the group’s website, which is still posted from the Faculty of Information Studies, University of Toronto http://www.fis.utoronto.ca/people/affiliated/arlisont/
• the CARLIS-L listserv
• regular e-mail communiqués
• bi-annual Chapter meetings

Finances & Awards

At the end of 2004 the Ontario Chapter maintained a bank balance of approximately $4,900.  The group’s major fundraising initiative, an annual fundraising silent auction, was held at AGO Librarian Randall Speller’s house.   The event was, unfortunately, not well attended but offered the opportunity to plan for future fund raising initiatives.  Two travel awards of $750 were given this year for the ARLIS NA New York Conference to:

• Margaret English, Fine Arts Library, University of Toronto
• Karen McKenzie, Chief Librarian, Edward P. Taylor Research Library and Archives, Art Gallery of Ontario

Meetings

Spring: 14 May, Brock University and Rodman Hall, St Catharines, Ontario. Organized by Lesley Bell, Slide Librarian, Brock University, the event featured:

• a demonstration of James A. Gibson Library’s new smart classroom, which features state-of-the-art presentation hardware and software
• a tour of historic Rodman Hall, the city’s former art gallery and recently acquired by Brock university, and a viewing of the gallery’s unique exhibition catalogue collection and art exhibitions
• a lecture by Shirley Madill, Chief Curator for the Art Gallery of Hamilton, presenting on development process and materials needed to create an art exhibition

Fall:  29 October, Queen’s University and Agnes Etherington Art Gallery, Kingston, Ontario.  Organized by Lucinda Walls, Public Services Librarian for Art and Music the event featured tours of:

• W.D. Jordan Special Collections & Music Library and exhibition “The Amazing John Buchan: His Life, his Library, his Legacy.”
• historic Agnes Etherington House, led by Pat Sullivan, Public Programs Officer
• Bader Gallery, by Janet Brooke, Director, Agnes Etherington Art Centre:
• “The Century of Mannerism” exhibition by Dr. David de Witt, Curator of European Art
• Architectural tour of University buildings led by Dr. Pierre du Prey, Architectural Historian and Professor of Art History, 
• Stauffer Library, Art Collection, Lucinda Walls, Art Librarian:

Upcoming Events

The Ontario Chapter, in combination with the Western New York Chapter, successfully won a bid for ARLIS NA special funding for a joint meeting to be held 12 – 14  May 2005 in Toronto.   The event will be held at the Ontario College of Art and Design and will explore the theme, “Re-Mapping our Urban Spaces.”  The organizing committee has secured the following speakers:

·        Henry Cheung, Bruce Mau Design, lead designer for Seattle Public Library

·        Larry Richardson, former Dean, Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto         

·        Lisa Rochon, Architecture Critic/Columnist, Globe and Mail

·        Harold Madi, architect, officeforurbanism (design firm responsible for Toronto’s Union Station renovation)

·        Glenn Miller, Vice President for Education and Research, Canadian Urban Institute (non-profit, public/private partnership organization)
