Meetings
The
spring meeting
was held on April 19, 2004, during the ARLIS/NA annual conference at the
Roosevelt Hotel, New York, NY. Minutes are available at: http://www.lib.umd.edu/arlis/meetings/meetingminutes/meeting_minutes_2004.04.19.html.
The
summer meeting
was held on June 18, 2004, at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in
Baltimore, Maryland. The meeting, organized
by Kathy Cowan of MICA, was titled a Digital Arts Workshop, and featured faculty
members from MICA and a curator and archivist from the Corcoran. It included an
overview of the history of electronic art, presentations from practitioners and
teachers in the field, and a panel on digital preservation and curation issues.
Minutes are at: http://www.lib.umd.edu/arlis/meetings/meetingminutes/meeting_minutes_2004.06.18.html.
Our
fall meeting was held October 1 and 2 at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.
This meeting was a joint event with the Visual Resources
Association/Mid-Atlantic Chapter. The meeting started with tours of some
Colonial Williamsburg facilities, including the slide collection; photo studio;
productions center; and the Visual Resources Center at Rockefeller Library. The
tours were followed by a panel discussion titled “Common Ground” which
focused on the theme of collection building, particularly in the area of
electronic resources. Speakers’ topics included the Digital Library
Foundation; collecting artists’ books; ARTStor; electronic journals in the
arts; and building non-eurocentric collections. Participants who stayed over
night attended tours of plantations along the James River or in Surry County.
Minutes are at: http://www.lib.umd.edu/arlis/meetings/meetingminutes/meeting_minutes_2004.10.01.html.

Awards
The
DC-MD-VA chapter gave two awards this year: the Caroline Backlund Travel Award
and the Diversity Award. The Backlund Travel Award provides $500 for a member to
use toward attending the national conference. This year’s recipient was
Phyllis Graham, of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece.
(Phyllis had previously lived and worked in the Washington, D.C. area, and had
retained her membership in the DC-MD-VA chapter). The Diversity Award provided
national membership, local membership, and conference registration to a local
library science student interested in art librarianship. The award recipient was
Trin Intra of the University of Maryland.
