Fall Meeting, September 5,
2003, University of California, Irvine—The morning started with an
architectural tour of the campus given by Eric Lutz, a PhD candidate at UC Santa
Barbara. 25 people attended the
afternoon business meeting, coffee break, and panel presentation.
At the business meeting, the ARLIS/SC Board and new chapter members were
introduced. Kelley Wolfe solicited
calls for nominations for the openings on the SC board.
Enough of the membership was present to vote on the issue of raising
local membership dues to the level of other chapters’ dues.
The proposal to raise local dues to $15.00 and offer free membership to
students received a unanimous vote. Anne
Blecksmith announced plans for a fundraiser at the San Antonio Winery in
downtown Los Angeles. Rina
Vecchiola reported on the ARLIS-West conference held in Portland and proposed
planning for a joint ARLIS/SC-NC meeting for 2004.
After a coffee break sponsored by the UCI Libraries, a panel of speakers
discussed the Online Archive of California (OAC) and Museums and the Online
Archive of California (MOAC) including history and background, image delivery,
encoding finding aids, and reference and instruction.
The panelists were:
Jackie
Dooley, Head of Special Collections and Archives, UC Irvine Libraries
Maureen
Burns, Humanities Curator, UC Irvine Visual Resources Collection
Kelley
Wolfe, Reference and Instruction Librarian, Libraries of the Claremont Colleges
Susan
Flanagan, Electronic Resources Librarian, Getty Research Institute
After the panel, attendees
enjoyed a reception at the Visual Resources Collection.
Joint
ARLIS NC & SC Luncheon at ARLIS/NA Conference, Baltimore, MD, March 23, 2003--At the recent ARLIS conference in Baltimore, 21 members of both the
northern and southern California regional chapters held a joint luncheon in
order to strengthen relationships among the state's ARLIS members. Even though
these chapters share the same geographic boundaries and unfortunately budget
crisis, the sheer size of the state doesn't allow for many face to face meetings
between northern and southern halves and necessitates the need for 2 state
chapters. Members seemed to enjoy the opportunity to finally affiliate faces
with the names of their CA colleagues and discussed the possibility of another
joint meeting sometime in the next year. While the agenda of the luncheon was
more social than business, travel awards were announced and distributed to 2
southern CA chapter members in appreciation of their service to both the
regional chapter and ARLIS as a whole. The recipients were: Nancy Norris, an
Arts and Humanities Cataloger at the UCLA Research Library and current Assistant
Head of the Monographic Cataloging and Authority Sections and Alan Michelson,
the Architecture and Design Librarian at the UCLA Arts Library. Nancy has
attended ARLIS conferences since 1986 and was co-chair of the 2001 LA conference
in addition to being Chair of this year's Wittenborn Award Committee. Attending
his third ARLIS conference, Alan was Moderator of this year's Art and Design
School Libraries' Section meeting and on the ARLIS/NA Travel Awards Committee.
Most recently he served as Chair of ARLIS/SC chapter. Congratulations to both of
them.
ARLIS/SC
Fundraiser at San Antonio Winery, December 6, 2003--12
members attended the fundraiser where they had lunch, did some wine tasting, and
took a tour of the Museum of Neon Art.
