The
Ohio Valley Chapter Officers met during the 2003 ARLIS National conference held
in Baltimore last March. Officers
discussed items for the next issue of COLLAGE.
Editor, Mona Chapin volunteered to host the Fall 2003 Ohio Valley
regional meeting to be held at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
The
Fall Ohio Valley meeting was held at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Twenty-three members were able to attend. The group had a tour of the Costume Department of the museum
and a presentation about OCLC's Content DM (digital images) and its possible use
to create an artist database based on artist collection files from various
institutions. The Chapter
also invited Dr. Linn Dietrich to speak about "Contemporary Arab and
Persian Women Artists". Dr.
Dietrich teaches Art History at Miami University.
The day concluded with a trip to the Lois
and Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art to view its current
exhibit as well as touring the building itself, designed by Iraqi architect,
Zaha Hadid.
The
Travel Award was presented at the business meeting to Holly Pierson, a recent
graduate of Kent State University Library School.
Holly received $200 to defray the cost of attending the meeting.
A discussion continued about the merits of Content DM.
Pam Eyerdam read a statement sent from the ARLIS/NA Midwest
representative, Suzy Frechette who was unable to attend.
The statement included some information about the April 2004 ARLIS
meeting in New York and that a Diversity Committee was established by the Board.
A
new Travel Awards Committee was formed, new committee members are Jane Carlin
and Anne Morris. Shannon van Kirk,
who is a member of the ARLIS/NA Diversity Committee, asked if the Travel Award
Committee could consider a minority travel award since ARLIS/NA is interested in
promoting diversity in the chapters. She
will work with both Jane and Anne on looking into this possibility.
A
new Nominating Committee was formed to recruit new 2004 Ohio Valley Officers.
New Committee members are Pam Eyerdam, Lori Thorrat, and Kerri Scannell.
During
2003, two issues (spring and fall) of the chapter newsletter, COLLAGE, were
published. The chapter website was updated to reflect the new officers and to
include the latest issue of COLLAGE
and the minutes from the current business meeting.
The
Chapter discussed at the Fall meeting to focus on mentoring, recruiting new
members, and developing diversity opportunities.
The
Chapter continues to investigate possibilities to create a national artist
database based from artists files. The
Fall 2003 meeting in Cincinnati invited an OCLC representative to speak about
Content DM and what other collections have done with this type of software.
The
Chapter will continue to monitor the developments of ARTStor and its
possibilities with digital images.
The
Chapter also began to offer graduate student membership at the cost of $10
(regular membership for professionals is $15).
A
new Nominating Committee was formed to recruit new 2004 Ohio Valley Officers.
New Committee members are Pam Eyerdam, Lori Thorrat, and Kerri Scannel.
Nominations were made for Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect (Chris Hatton);
Secretary-Treasurer (Kay Downey); COLLAGE Editor (Ellen Rohmiller).
