National Conference, Baltimore, MD:
Hosting the national conference
in Baltimore MD kept the DC-MD-VA chapter busy much of 2002 and for the first
part of 2003. Conference attendance
was 500+ and the programs, tours, and workshops were well received. Chapter members staffed the hospitality desk, lead tours,
moderated programs, and generally jumped in and helped where needed.
As a fundraiser, the chapter sold note cards with the conference logo on
them. The cards sold well and
continue to sell in Baltimore area shops. Members
who would like to purchase cards can contact Linda Tompkins-Baldwin at ltompkins@artbma.org
for pricing and availability.
Chapter
Awards
The DC-MD-VA chapter gave two
awards this year: the Caroline Backlund Travel Award and the Diversity Award.
The Backlund Travel Award provides $500 for a member to use toward
attending the national conference. This
year’s recipient was Heather Ball, Art and Architecture Librarian at Virginia
Tech in Blacksburg, VA. The
Diversity Award, a new award, provided national membership, local membership,
and conference registration to a local Library Science student interested in Art
Librarianship. The award recipient
was Maria Sampang of Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
The chapter hopes that subsequent conference hosting chapters will carry
on this award in their areas.
Spring
Meeting
In the midst of conference
planning, the chapter met in March at the University of Maryland, Baltimore
County Library. After the
completion of the business meeting, host Tom Beck took members on a tour of
special collections and of an exhibit on self-taught French graphic designer
Robert Massin entitled: Massin in Continuo: A Dictionary.
Fall
Meeting
The fall meeting was held in
November at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.
Future meeting locations for 2004 were discussed including a summer
workshop meeting on the digital arts. Membership
hopes to meet in each of the three areas represented by the chapter with
suggested cities of Richmond, VA, Baltimore, Md., and Washington, D.C.
The chapter hopes to continue the Diversity Committee formed to solicit
and review applications for the conference related diversity award mentioned
earlier in this report. The goals
of the committee are outreach to area library students interested in art
librarianship and to encourage participation in ARLIS.
After a lull in publication the chapter newsletter will begin again and
the website will be updated. Chair
Marjorie Chenoweth solicited nominations for Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect and
Newsletter Editor. After the
business meeting, members were treated to a tour by host Sharon Wasserman of the
library and its exhibit on children's book illustration.
Members were then invited to visit the museum exhibits.
