South Regional Representative

From May 1, 2002 through the Pre-Conference Executive Board Meeting in Baltimore, MD on March 20, 2003, I am completing the last year of Paula Hardin’s two-year term.  Hardin was required to resign because she moved out of the South Region.  I will be beginning my own term as South Regional Representative at the Post-Conference Executive Board Meeting on March 26, 2003.

Meetings attended:

1.      Annual ARLIS/NA meeting, St. Louis, MO, March 20-26, 2002.

2.      Conference Planning Advisory Committee, Baltimore, MD, June 7-8, 2002.

3.      ARLIS/NA Mid-Year Executive Board Meeting, New York, NY, August 10-11, 2002.

4.      ARLIS/Texas-Mexico Chapter Meeting, Austin, TX, October 17-19, 2002.

Chapters:

The Executive Board has accepted a proposal from ARLIS/Texas-Mexico to host the ARLIS/NA annual conference in Houston in 2005.

ARLIS/SE and ARLIS/Texas-Mexico are planning a regional meeting in New Orleans, LA which will be November 13-16, 2003.

DC/MA/VA are the host chapter of the ARLIS/NA Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD March 20-26, 2003.  The planning committee has done a remarkable job.

I communicated with DC/MD/VA, Southeast, and Texas-Mexico regarding action item 113.  All chapter fundraising must go through the Development Committee.  Chapters are not to solicit funds directly from donors.

Committees:

Gerd Muesham.  Paula Gabbard, Chair.  Award winner selected.  Donny Smith will attend the ARLIS/NA Annual Meeting in Baltimore. His paper is entitled The Surrogate vs. the Thing which her wrote as a student at Drexel University College of Information Science & Technology.

AWSAB. Lorna Corbetta-Noyes, Chair.  Search engine implemented.  Members only section developed and implemented. Daniel Starr has suggested that the Advisory Board be dissolved at the end of this term.

Issues:

ARLIS/SE continues to request a specific time slot at the Annual ARLIS/NA Meeting for chapter meetings. They feel that chapters need to have a more visible presence at the annual conference.  Because they are such a large chapter, it is difficult for them to meet regularly, and so they hold a business meeting at the annual conference.  They self-schedule, but this always conflicts with other events.  Though they know that the Executive Board is attempting to streamline the organization, they hope that since the chapters are asked to participate in annual conference financial sponsorship that they in turn would be given a more viable presence at the conference.

On behalf of ARLIS/Texas-Mexico, I have submitted a proposal for a Task Force on Mexico recruitment and relations to Allen Townsend, Vice-President/President-Elect.
