Executive Board Activities:

Attended the ARLIS/NA annual conference in St. Louis, 20-26 March. Participated in the pre- and post-conference meetings in St. Louis. Attended annual business meetings of the Membership Committee, International Relations Committee, and Architecture Section.

Attended the mid-year ARLIS/NA Executive Board Meeting in New York, 10 & 11 August. Prepared a report on mid-year activities in preparation for the mid-year EB meeting. Solicited issues for the Board from Canadian members, the International Relations Committee, and Membership Committee.

Participated in Executive Board e-mail discussions.

Served as Board liaison to the Membership Committee and International Relations Committee. Participated in e-mail discussions with these committees.

Committee Activities:

International Relations Committee

Susana Tejada, Chair

The IRC received approval to host a panel discussion at the Baltimore 2003 conference. The panel discussion is entitled Nordic Expeditions: Exploring Art Information Resources for Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden.

The committee’s bid to host an International Relations Social at the Baltimore 2003 Conference is still under discussion. Securing sufficient funds to provide light refreshments at this event has not been resolved at the time of this report.

Membership Committee

Leslie Preston, Chair

During the summer the committee worked on the organizational fees structure project. Comparison data from other library/information organizations was gathered. The chart was sent to the Executive Board for review.

The committee’s focus during the fall and right through to the present has been the library school outreach project.

Chapter Activities:

Informed and encouraged all Canadian members to attend the upcoming national conference in Baltimore, to support the conference by donating to the Welcome Party, and to join/renew their membership in ARLIS/NA. Encouraged members to apply for ARLIS/NA Travel Awards. The David Mirvish Books on Art Travel Award for Canadian art librarians ceased this year. Funding to attend the annual conference is an ongoing concern for Canadian members.

ARLIS/Canada Chapter

Irene Puchalski, Chair

Organized and chaired the ARLIS/NA Canada chapter business meeting in St. Louis on March 21^st.

Posted the minutes of the ARLIS/Canada chapter business meeting on carlis-l (in English and French). Minutes were taken by Paul Chénier, who transcribed the minutes in English and French.

Kathy Zimon was the recipient of the David Mirvish Books on Art Travel Award to attend the ARLIS/NA Conference in St. Louis.

Attended the joint ARLIS Canada/Northwest chapter regional conference May 31^st – June 2^nd in Banff, Alberta.

Coordinated members from Quebec and Ontario to obtain publications for the silent auction fund raiser for the joint regional conference.

Made personal contact with members of ARLIS/Ontario, ARLIS/MOQ, and ARLIS/Northwest chapters who attended the joint regional conference.

Wrote several thank-you letters to speakers at the joint ARLIS Canada/Northwest chapter regional conference.

Wrote thank-you letters to the organizers of the joint ARLIS Canada/Northwest chapter regional conference.

Explored the feasibility of charitable status for the ARLIS/Canada chapter.

Submitted a report on ARLIS/Canada news for the August issue of Update.

Appointed the jury members for the 2003 Dwyer Award. Posted a call for nominations on carlis-l in French and English, and on arlis-l in English in early November and again in early December. For the first time Canadian publishers associations and Canadian writers associations were also contacted. Arranged for jurors to receive for review the nominated titles not in their libraries.

As per the request by Canadian members, the Dwyer Award book sticker and certificate are now bilingual. Translations for both were provided by Françoise Roux of the CCA.

Daphne Dufresne of UQAM has kindly agreed to translate the new ARLIS/NA Membership Brochure into French.

ARLIS/MOQ Chapter

Wolfgang Noethlichs and Jonathan Franklin, Co-chairs

The chapter held two meetings in 2002, the second being a joint meeting with ARLIS/Ontario held in Montreal to celebrate ARLIS/MOQ’s fifteenth anniversary. The experiment to have two members serve as co-chairs has worked well for the chapter this year. Two members will also serve as co-chairs in 2003. There is no vice-chair.

In 2002 Paul Chénier was the recipient of the chapter travel award to attend the ARLIS/NA Conference in St. Louis. The membership award was given to Francesca Maniaci.

As Canadian Representative I submitted a report to the membership for their spring meeting and was able to attend the fall gathering where I presented a report at the business meeting.

ARLIS/Ontario Chapter

The chapter held two meetings in 2002, the second being a joint meeting with ARLIS/MOQ in Montreal to celebrate the MOQ chapter’s fifteenth anniversary. In addition, a successful Christmas fundraiser/social was held at the Ontario College of Art and Design in December. Money raised is for the Travel Award, which in 2003 will be increased to $750. Cdn to send a member to the ARLIS/NA Conference in Baltimore.

Daniel Payne was the recipient of the chapter travel award in 2002, allowing him to attend his first ARLIS/NA Conference in St. Louis.

As Canadian Representative I attended both meetings and presented reports.

ARLIS/Northwest Chapter

In addition to the successful ARLIS Canada/Northwest Chapter regional conference held at the Banff Centre and hosted by the Alberta branch of the chapter, the Northwest Chapter also held a meeting in Vancouver in December.

As Canadian Representative I had the good fortune to attend both meetings, as both locations are a fair distance from my home base. Reporting was on an informal basis in Banff due to the full schedule of the 2.5 day event. A report was presented at the business meeting in Vancouver. I have been able to engage the interest of the Northwest Chapter to consider the possibility of hosting the ARLIS/NA conference in Banff in 2006. This is still in the exploratory stage.
