PAPER IN PROGRESS

Occasional Paper No. 14, The Library and the Accreditation Process in Design Disciplines:  Best Practices, by Jeanne M. Brown, Paul Glassman, and Janine Henri, is expected to be published in time for the 2003 annual conference in Baltimore.  It provides a practical guide to librarians and library staff in design disciplines participating in self-studies for accreditation applications. This publication addresses goal III of the ARLIS/NA 2000-2005 strategic plan:  To exert an influence on external forces affecting the profession through promotion, cooperation, and advocacy:  A.  Establish and promote professional and information standards, working cooperatively with peer organizations.  This Occasional Paper will include six chapters, in addition to an introduction, appendices, and a bibliography:

       I.          Types and functions of libraries in design disciplines

II.          Accreditation requirements and the library

     III.          Standards and accreditation

IV.          The role of the librarian in the accreditation visit, by Elizabeth Douthitt Byrne, Head, Environmental Design Library, University of California, Berkeley

       V.          Approaches to self-study and self-evaluation

     VI.          Supporting documentation

PROMOTION

The Library and the Accreditation Process in Design Disciplines:  Best Practices will be promoted through a broadside, serving as a print and Web advertisement and including an order form, will be distributed at the annual conference in Baltimore.  It will also be announced on ARLIS-L.  The paper will be listed in Books in Print and will be announced over several group electronic-mail lists.  It will be announced at meetings of the Academic Division, Art & Design School Division, Visual Resources Division, Architecture Section, and the Standards Committee.

PROPOSED PAPER

Linda Roccos of the College of Staten Island proposed Ancient Greek Costume Studies: Annotated Bibliography, Commentaries, and Database.  To date no bibliography exists specifically for ancient Greek costume.  The proposed bibliography will be considerably more comprehensive than any existing resource.  It includes works that are difficult to locate, works that are often not indexed under “costume” or “garments.” The proposed manuscript will include at least 450 annotated bibliographical references, a chronological list, and commentaries on themes of scholarly interest such as “Ancient Literary Sources,” “Textiles and Weaving,” “Female Garments,” “Macedonian Costume,” “Accessories,” and others.  Approval by the executive board is an agenda item for its next meeting.

ISSUES & SUGGESTIONS

Responsibility of deposit of papers with the Library of Congress, as well as registration of copyright, should be clarified.  The editor will, before the annual meeting, develop suggestions for revising ARLIS/NA Web site pages related to Occasional Papers (http://www.arlisna.org/publications.html), (http://www.arlisna.org/pubnsopol.html),  and (http://www.arlisna.org/occpaps.html#libinst). Before then, if possible however, there should be a link from the "ARLIS/NA Occasional Paper and On-line Publications" page (http://www.arlisna.org/pubnsopol.html#) to the online order form (http://www.arlisna.org/forms/pub4saleFRM.html).
