MEMBERSHIP
DISCUSSION: How can new members become more involved in the organization?
Suggestions and comments were:
a.
Membership form: one is asked to note one’s interests and the Executive
Board then tries to match interests to organizational needs.
b.
We need more discussion at the new members meeting.
Create a forum for new members to volunteer and get help from seasoned
members.
c.
Mentoring program: most mentors invite the new members to attend whatever
meetings they do.
d.
There needs to be more descriptive information available via the ARLIS/NA
web site regarding the roles and responsibilities of committee members, chairs,
and other offices.
e.
New members ought to also feel free to take the initiative to attend
whatever committee meetings they wish.
f.
Edit the membership form so that members can indicate exactly which
committees they wish to join.
g.
Investigate an internship program for new members which would help pair
them up with members with official responsibilities.
h.
New members ought to submit a short paragraph about themselves to
introduce them to the membership – the group then offered that all members
ought to do this!
i.
Put new member information into Update.
j.
Contact your local chapter.
In
terms of the Academic Libraries Division, suggestions included becoming a
conference mentor, and to encourage your academic colleagues to come to
meetings!
DISCUSSION
ON RECRUITMENT PROBLEMS—the graying of the profession?
How
can we make art librarianship attractive and competitive today? Lucie
Stylianopoulos (University of Virginia) asked what ARLIS/NA is doing about the
problem. Henry Pisciota, who is on
the Professional Development Committee, replied that Goal I of the Strategic
Plan is to increase the effectiveness of art librarians and visual resources
curators by focusing efforts on professional and continuing education, as well
as professional development activities He
also reported that folks are trying to create cooperative programs such as that
at Maryland which hope to have a specific art librarian tract, and to distribute
this plan widely via the ARLIS/NA web site when it is finished.
Anne Haas noted that we need to encourage art history faculty and
programs to encourage such a tract as well.
Stephanie Supel? (NYPL) suggested that we create a contest to publicize
that there is an art librarian tract out there.
Carol Ann Fabian (University of Buffalo) will write up a
point/counterpoint program on tenure vs. non-tenure faculty and the salary
issue.
