The next Chapter event was the Annual Conference which took place in Asheville, North Carolina from November 7-10, 2002.  The Chapter meeting was attended by a record number of 45 attendees representing 9 states.  Among those present were a group of library science students from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill who have created the first student chapter of ARLIS/NA at their school.  UNC-Asheville and Clemson University were extended special thanks for their donation of space and vans during the conference.  During the business meeting, the following took place: Lee Sorensen reported that the chapter archives are permanently deposited at Duke University and the inventory guide by Lee Eltzroth up-to-date; Newsletter Editor Cary Wilkins reported on updates and welcomed submissions to our newsletter; Webmaster Sarah McCleskey reported on new information regarding the chapter web site, and was given special commendation for her hard work on the web site; Stephen Patrick reported that the ACRL-ARTS program at ALA sponsored by ARLIS/SE and hosted at the Woodruff  Center and the Atlanta College of Art Library went very well and was well-received; Kim Collins reported that membership recruitment ideas have been tabled while ARLIS/NA works on membership recruitment; Roberto Ferrari read a prepared statement from our new chapter liaison Laura Schwartz regarding ARLIS/NA Executive Board business, etc.; elections for new officers were held (see above), and special thanks were given to the 2002 chapter officers for their hard work; those present voted to sponsor $250 to ARLIS/NA to participate in the national conference Welcome Party; information on the 2003 joint annual conference in New Orleans with ARLIS/Tx-Mx was discussed; the presentation of the winners of the LoPresti Awards were given; finally, there were also reports from the listserv manager and chapter historian.  Events at the regional conference included visits to the UNC-Asheville Library to hear speakers, tour of the Biltmore Estate (including visits to their archives and the Vanderbilt library) and the Grove Park Inn, and a walking tour of downtown Asheville.  Our next chapter business meeting will be held in Baltimore at the next ARLIS/NA conference.

Issues for the Executive Board:

We would like the Board to consider offering chapters the ability to schedule in advance meeting rooms for business meetings, as divisions, sections, etc. are given that chance.  We realize that it is often difficult for planning room space at the national annual conference events, but chapters are asked to assist in sponsoring events such as the Welcome Party (which we are happy to do when able) but then not given an opportunity to schedule a meeting time for a business meeting until the last minute.
