Activities:

Membership met at the ARLIS/NA-VRA Conference in St. Louis; discussion focused on Awards available for 2003. New Member, Diversity, and Student Travel Awards were discussed. Award criteria and selection process were reviewed. Timelines for Award announcements, submission deadlines, review deadlines and Award notification dates were set.

TAC developed and mounted a new TAC website to clarify Award criteria and TAC applicant criteria, review and selection process; see: http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/apl/temp/travelhome.html

The Committee worked with AWS web master Derek Crosley to develop a new Travel Award online application form http://www.arlisna.org/forms/travelaward2003.html.

The online application form was highly successful; all but three applicants used the online application form. Additionally, the online application insured complete and standardized applicant information.

Donor commitments were secured for existing and new awards. Additionally, RLG offered to fund Middle Eastern Travel Award, but due to the TAC timetable and political events TAC refused this sponsorship.

Members created and/or updated distribution lists for international and student travel awards. Award announcements were placed via supplied distribution lists by Vicky Roper.

ARLIS/NA Strategic Plan Action Items 2000-2005

1.      Develop and maintain funding for a domestic travel award. (I C) Ongoing for 2003 cycle; in the 2004 cycle, responsibility for securing and maintaining all travel awards funding may be reassigned to the Development Committee.

2.      Develop and maintain funding for a visual resources travel award. (I C) Committee concurred with Executive Board and decided not to seek funding for, nor offer a visual resources travel award at this time.

3.      Develop and maintain funding for a new member travel award. (I C) Various new awards were considered this year. ARLIS/NA generously offered $1000 to fund a two new Conference travel awards for ARLIS/NA members; and a new Student travel award was funded through Salander O’Reilly Galleries.

Executive Board issues:

The Committee would like to clarify its role in “developing” as opposed to “administering” the Travel Awards. Specifically, direction is needed regarding responsibility for securing new and maintaining existing funding for Travel awards through external sponsors under the new ARLIS/NA comprehensive committee structure.

The Committee does not anticipate initiating any new Travel Awards for 2003-2004. Direction is needed from the Executive Board if any new Awards are to be administered so that criteria can be set, and additional announcement distribution lists developed.
