EXECUTIVE BOARD ACTIVITIES:

Attended Annual Conference in Los Angeles, March 29 - April 4.

Attended pre-conference board meetings March 29-30 and post-conference board meeting April 4.

Attended annual business meetings of the Research Committee, Professional Development Committee, the Art and Design School Library Division, and the Reference and Information Services Section.

Participated in the online board meeting conducted through the "Blackboard"system, June 1, 2001.

Attended the mid-year board meeting in New York City, August 11-13, 2001.

As Board Liaison, communicated regularly with the chairs of the Research, Professional Development, and Collection Development Commitees.

Participated in board deliberations, motions and other activities throughout the year.

COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES:

Professional Development Committee
Tom Grieves, Chair

This committee had its first successful ARLIS/NA Internship recipient in 2000-2001 and plans to continue sponsoring this important award.  Assisted in updating the guidelines for the 2001-2002 ARLIS/NA Internship Award. Participated in drafting guidelines for the Robertson Rare Book School Scholarship Award, a new award named in honor of Jack Robertson, longtime member or ARLIS/NA who initiated this relationship with the Rare Book School in Virginia. This award is available to members of ARLIS/NA and guidelines are now posted on the ARLIS Website.

Research Committee

This committee each year processes applications for the ARLIS/NA Worldwide Books and Wilson Publications research awards. In addition to the award for print publications, a new award was offered in 2001 by Wilson, for electronic publications. In order to process research award applications, copies of each submission are mailed to committee members for review. This year, the committee requested annual funding ($150.00) to cover photocopying and mailing expenses. Their request was granted for 2002-2003 fiscal year. In support of this request, I forwarded it to the board and facilitated clarification of funding and invoicing questions regarding the Worldwide and Wilson awards.

Collection Development Committee

This committee worked on a directory of Out-of-Print book dealers, among other projects, available as links on their website. Although I was unable to attend their annual business meeting in L.A. due to scheduling conflicts, I maintained communication with the chair throughout the year.

DIVISION/ SECTION ACTIVITIES:

Art and Design School Library Division
Jill Patrick, Moderator

This division sponsored several sessions at the Los Angeles conference. For the St. Louis conference, it is planning one session on sound art; two seminars, one on information literacy and the visual learner and another for solo librarians; and also a workshop on public speaking.

Reference and Information Services Section
Marcy Neth, Moderator

This section provided a panel of speakers on the Virtual Reference Desk at its annual business meeting at the L.A. conference and sponsored another well-attended workshop on Basic Resources in Costume, Art Direction, Film and Artists' Videos. They also submitted a list of new and noteworthy online resources for arts of the book and printmaking, for their column in the October 2001 issue of UPDATE.

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES:

Throughout the year I maintained communication with chapter presidents and monitored and sometimes participated in chapter listserv discussions. When necessary, I provided leadership advice and input from the ARLIS/NA Executive Board. Sent a summary of the activities of the ARLIS/NA Mid-Year Board Meeting to all chapter presidents and encouraged chapters to donate funds in support of the St. Louis Annual Conference Welcome Party. Sent welcome notes to all incoming chapter presidents, congratulatory letters to all newly elected chapter officers, and thank you letters to outgoing presidents.

April 27, 2001 Museum of Our National Heritage, Lexington, MA.
Lecture: "Masonic Symbolism in Art", exhibits.

August 16-17, 2001 IFLA 2001 Satellite Meeting, Boston, MA sponsored by ARLIS/NE, ARLIS/NA and IFLA's Art Libraries Section. Theme: "How do I find a picture of*?: the changing nature of image research." 175 attendees. Attended this conference and also volunteered to help "shepherd" a tour of Boston's Beacon Hill. Sent thank you letters to conference planners Amanda Bowen, Adeane Bregman, Sarah Dickinson, Stephen Nonack, Merrill Smith, Carol Terry, Hugh Wilburn, and ARLIS/NA Liaison to the Art Section of IFLA, Jeannette Dixon.

October 26, 2001 Yale University. Theme: "Building for the future: architecture and art libraries.", exhibits, demonstration of INSIGHT image software. Attended this meeting. Sent thank you letters to co-planners Barbara Rockenbach, Laurel Bliss, and Craig Holme.

The chapter initiated a new $500.00 scholarship for art library students in honor of ARLIS/NE Life Member, Elmar Seibel. The chapter donated $250.00 in support of the 2002 St. Louis Annual Conference Welcome Party and approved similar funds for the St. Louis Conference.

This is a very active and large chapter. Members did an outstanding job organizing the IFLA Satellite Meeting. The whole event was beautifully planned with exceptionally high quality programs and speakers.

May 3, 2001 Japan Society, New York. Library tour, exhibit "Frank Lloyd Wright and the Art of Japan".

May 13-14, 2001 Philadelphia Museum of Art and Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania. Northeast Regional Meeting, co-sponsored with the ARLIS/

Delaware Valley Chapter. Exhibits, panelists: "How Soon is Now?: Art Information Professionals in the 21st Century". Attended this meeting and was able to meet with some ARLIS/NY members.

June 9, 2001 Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, Oyster Bay, NY. Tour of gardens and library.

September 24, 2001 Dahesh Museum of Art, New York. Exhibit "Telling Tales: Classic Images from the Dahesh Museum of Art".

December 7, 2001 Holiday Party at the Whitney Museum of Art.

Exhibits.

The chapter contributed $500.00 to the 2001 Los Angeles Conference and also the 2002 St. Louis Annual Conference Welcome Party.

At the request of the newsletter editors, I wrote an article detailing the IFLA 2001 Satellite Meeting in Boston for the Fall 2001 issue of the ARLIS/ New York News. This article is now also available on the ARLIS/New England website. I regret I was unable to attend any of their meetings.

This is a large and very active chapter. Many members are involved in ARLIS on the national level, by serving on the Executive Board or by participating in sessions at the annual conferences. Ted Goodman is our ARLIS/NA President, Daniel Starr is our ARLIS/NA Vice-President. This chapter is beginning to plan for hosting the ARLIS/NA 2004 Annual Conference in New York City.

May 18, 2001 Albright Knox Art Gallery and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, Buffalo, NY. Business meeting and exhibit "Circa 1900: From the Genteel Tradition to the Jazz Age".

November 2, 2001 Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester. Joint meeting with the VRA/ Western New York. Tours, exhibits, presentations "Teacher Resource Center: Museum School Collaboration" and the EmBARK Collections Management System.

The chapter created an ARLIS/WNY promotional brochure and designed chapter coffee mugs for sale. It also discussed ideas for outreach to MLS candidates, including mentoring and practicums. Members voted to revise Chapter Bylaws and are awaiting Board ratification. They also plan to revise their Chapter Handbook. Major changes in their bylaws would have their chapter membership criteria more in line with ARLIS/NA and would create two separate board positions of Secretary and Treasurer.

The chapter contributed $50.00 in support of the St. Louis Annual Conference Welcome Party.

This is a small chapter with a strong desire to grow. Members are spread out over a large geographic area, known for its heavy winter snowfall. This makes planning/ attending meetings a challenge. The chapter is looking into hosting a joint meeting with ARLIS/New England in 2002 or 2003. I regret I was unable to attend either of their meetings this year.

May 13-14, 2001 Philadelphia Museum of Art and Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania. Northeast Regional Meeting, co-sponsored with the ARLIS/NY Chapter. Exhibits, panelists: "How Soon is Now?: Art Information Professionals in the 21st Century." Attended this very well organized meeting and sent a congratulatory email to the chapter president.

October 22, 2001 Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Fall business meeting and tour of the collection.

This chapter received ARLIS/NA special funding of $500.00 in support of their 2001 Regional Meeting. Krista Ivy resigned as President of the chapter during the summer due to her family relocating in California and Vice-President, Mary Louise Castaldi assumed these duties. The Chapter donated $250.00 in support of the L.A. Annual Conference Welcome Party and approved a similar donation for the St. Louis Conference.

This is a small, but dedicated chapter. They did an excellent job co-planning and hosting the Regional Meeting in May and, in support of the ARLIS/NA Strategic Plan, are continuing to explore professional development activities on the chapter level. A committee has been established to identify potential future workshops and/or lectures.
