The Nominating Committee for 2001 sought candidates for Vice President/President-Elect, Treasurer, West Regional Representative, and Canadian Representative. Our work began at the 2001 conference in Los Angeles. As the spring progressed, we had only found two candidates for the West Regional Representative position and had not found any candidates for Vice President. The chair consulted with President Ted Goodman and Vice President Daniel Starr about the situation. By the time of the mid-year board meetings with an incomplete slate, a summary of our situation was presented to the board.

Following board discussion as well as some discussion on ARLIS-L, it was determined to proceed with a single-candidate slate, following Robert’s Rules of Order. One person was proposed for each office, a period of time was allowed for comment or external nomination, and the slate of officers was considered elected by the membership since no other candidates were presented.

The slate of officers was Allen Townsend, Vice President/President-Elect; Phil Heagy, Treasurer; Kay Teel, West Regional Representative; and Irene Puchalski, Canadian Representative.

The information about the candidates was published in a fall issue of ARLIS/NA update.

Following the presentation and approval of the single-candidate slate, an Ad-Hoc Presidential Committee on ARLIS/NA Election Procedures (Daniel Starr, chair) was convened to look at the electoral process. Previous Nominating Committees had also had considerable trouble finding two candidates for each office. Occasionally, a single candidate had been run, principally for the Canadian Representative position. The suggested changes to the election procedures are part of the report of the Ad-Hoc Presidential Committee.

A separate list of suggested candidates, along with the results of our deliberations, has been passed on to the 2002 Nominating Committee.

Respectfully submitted,

Sherman Clarke, chair; Janine Henri; Natalia Lonchyna; Tom Young; Ted Goodman, board liaison
