The website is hosted and maintained by
James Rout at the Banff Centre for the Arts.
Canadian members held their annual business meeting at the
ARLIS/NA conference in Los Angeles, from 8 - 9:30 p.m. The meeting was well attended, despite
being scheduled directly after the silent auction and happy hour. The meeting
was chaired by the ARLIS/Canada Chair, Carole Goldsmith, and reports were given
on behalf of the individual Canadian chapters and regions. Paul Chénier took minutes at the
meeting, and transcribed the minutes in both English and French. The minutes were posted on both carlis-l
and the ARLIS/Canada website.
ARLIS/Canada members made generous contributions to the
welcome party and/or the silent auction at the ARLIS/NA annual conference in Los
Angeles. Several of our members
were involved in moderating sessions and presenting papers at the conference, as
well as serving in positions on the ARLIS/NA Executive Board and other
Committees over the past year.
Karen McKenzie (Art Gallery of Ontario) completed her term as
ARLIS/NA President at the annual membership meeting in Los Angeles. Karen presided over the Society at a
difficult time as ARLIS/NA made the transition to a new management company,
Clarke Association Management Services, based in Kanata, Ontario. Marilyn Berger later presented Karen
with a beautiful orchid on behalf of all Canadian members.
Kathy Zimon received the 2000/2001 Melva J. Dwyer Award, for
her scholarly publication, Alberta Society of Artists: the first Seventy
Years, University of Calgary Press, 2000. Jury members for the 2001 award
were Daphne Dufresne, Université du Québec à Montréal; James Rout, Banff Centre
for the Arts; and Cheryl Siegel, Vancouver Art Gallery. Cheryl Siegel presented
the award to Kathy on behalf of ARLIS/Canada during convocation ceremonies at
the ARLIS/NA conference in Los Angeles.
Kathy also received a Worldwide Books Publication award for her
book.
Jury members for the 2002 Melva J. Dwyer Award were appointed
in fall 2001. The new jury members are Diana Cooper, University of British
Columbia; Rosemary Haddad, Canadian Centre for Architecture; and Irene
Puchalski, University of Toronto. A
call for nominations for the 2002 Dwyer Award was posted on both carlis-l and
arlis-l in late November, and paper copies of the nomination form were mailed to
all Canadian members of ARLIS/NA.
The winner will be announced at the ARLIS/NA annual conference in St.
Louis.
Jo Beglo (National Gallery of Canada) and Randall Speller (Art
Gallery of Ontario) presented papers at the 'History of the Book in Canada'
conference which took place November 15-17 in Vancouver. Several ARLIS/Canada members attended
the conference. Jo spoke about the National Gallery publication programme, while
Randall presented a paper on Arthur Steven and the Ryerson Press. Jo Beglo is coordinating a research
publication entitled 'Essays in the History of Art Librarianship in Canada,'
with submissions from members across the country. The deadline for contributions is May
15, 2002.
Two Canadian members received research awards and appointments
from ARLIS/NA in 2001. Jonathan
Franklin (National Gallery of Canada) received the H.W. Wilson Foundation
Research Award for a bibliographical study of art auction catalogues. Jonathan
was also appointed as ARLIS/NA web editor.
Kathy was appointed co-editor of Art Documentation, and received
the Worldwide Books Publication Award, for Alberta Society of
Artists. Irene
Puchalski was awarded the David Mirvish Books on Art Travel Award
Plans are well underway for a joint regional meeting of
ARLIS/Canada and ARLIS/NA NW Chapter, to take place in Banff, Alberta, May
31-June 2, 2002. The theme of the meeting is "Springtime in the Rockies." ARLIS/Canada received funding from
ARLIS/NA to help support this meeting. Information on the mini-conference is now

Carole Goldsmith and Paul Chenier submitted a report on
ARLIS/Canada Chapter activities for the June 2001 issue of ARLIS/NA
Update. Carole also
posted a news update on carlis-l in early May, and prepared a written report to
be read at the ARLIS/MOQ annual fall meeting.

ARLIS/MOQ held their spring meeting May 11 at the Cirque du
Soleil site in Montreal. The
meeting focussed on digital art and digitization projects, with presentations by
local artists and members. The fall
meeting took place at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, and offered
tours of the National Archives Preservation Centre and the Indian & Inuit
Art Centre at the Dept. of Indian & Northern Affairs. The Chapter now has three professional
development awards: an award to attend the ARLIS/NA annual conference, a
membership award, and a new award for travel to a conference other than the
annual conference. Jonathan
Franklin received a professional development award to attend the annual
conference in Los Angeles. The
Chapter is currently working on a project to update the Directory of Vertical
Files on Art and Architecture / Repertoire des dossiers documentaires en art et
architecture.
On May 25, ARLIS/NA Ontario Chapter members gathered in London
Ontario, for tours of local and regional history collections at the Public
Library and the University of Western Ontario. Members also visited the
Macintosh Gallery and the John Labatt Visual Arts Centre at Western, where the
business meeting took place. The
ARLIS/Canada Chair, Carole Goldsmith, attended the chapter spring meeting. The fall meeting was held Sept. 28-30 at
White Mountain Academy of the Arts at Elliot Lake, hosted by Thea DeVos. In December, a small but enthusiastic
group of members held a fundraising social event at the AGO to raise money for
the chapter travel award. Mary
Kandiuk (York University) received the award to attend the 2001 ARLIS/NA annual
conference in Los Angeles.
Early in 2001, an earthquake caused damage to some ARLIS NW Chapter members' libraries in Washington State. Vancouver members mourned the unexpected loss of Rose Emery, from the Vancouver Art Gallery. The spring meeting was held in a former courtroom at the VAG and included a timely presentation on disaster planning. Following the meeting, members toured the Cornelius Krieghoff exhibition. The annual fall meeting was held in December at the University of British Columbia and included a guided tour of the 'Spirit of Islam' exhibit at the Museum of Anthropology. Members approved revisions to the chapter by-laws, which were presented to ARLIS/NA Executive for approval. Marilyn Nasserden (University of Calgary) agreed to co-chair the Banff Meeting Planning Committee with James Rout. The NW Chapter Executive agreed to provide financial support for the Banff meeting, and is hoping to recover some costs through fundraising and sponsorship opportunities. Members are looking forward to hosting the second regional conference of ARLIS/Canada.

Les
membres canadiens se sont réunis pour la séance d’affaires de la réunion
annuelle au Congrès d’ARLIS/NA à Los Angeles, le 2 avril 2001, de 20h00 à
21h30. Plus de quinze membres se sont rencontrés
même si la réunion avait lieu après l’encan silencieux et le « happy
hour ». Carole Goldsmith a présidé la réunion. Les représentants des
chapitres canadiens et régionaux ont présenté leurs rapports. Le procès-verbal
fut noté et traduit par Paul Chénier et affiché sur les sites carlis-l et
ARLIS/Canada par Carole.
Les
membres d’ARLIS/Canada ont généreusement contribué à la soirée de
bienvenue et/ou à l’encan silencieux du congrès annuel d’ARLIS/NA à Los
Angeles. Certains de nos membres ont présidé des sessions de travail et ont présenté des conférences. De plus, ils ont participé aux
réunions du Executive Board et d’autres comités durant l’année.
C’est
lors du Congrès annuel à Los Angeles que Karen McKenzie du Art Gallery of
Ontario a completé sont mandat comme présidente d’ARLIS/NA. Karen fut présidente
lors de certains changements à ARLIS/NA. Une nouvelle compagnie de service de
gestion, Clarke Association Management Services, situé à Kanata en Ontario
s’occupe de la gestion d’ARLIS/NA. Au
nom des membres canadiens, Marilyn Berger a envoyé des
orchidées pour remercier
Karen de son travail.
Kathy Zimon a reçu le Prix
Melva J. Dwyer, pour la publication “Alberta Society of Artists : the
first seventy years”, University of Calgary Press, 2000. Les membres du jury 2001 étaient

Publication Award pour cette publication.
Les
membres du jury pour le Prix Melva J. Dwyer 2002 furent choisi à l’automne
2001. Ils sont : Diana Cooper, de l’University of British Columbia,
Rosemary Haddad du Centre Canadien d’Architecture et Irene Puchalski, de
l’University of Toronto. La demande pour des mises en candidatures pour le
Prix Dwyer 2002 fut affichée sur les sites carlis-l et arlis-l à la fin
novembre. L’envoi des copies de formulaires de mise en candidature fut posté à tous les membres canadiens d’ARLIS/NA. Le récipiendaire
du prix sera annoncé à la cérémonie de remise des prix au Congrès annuel
d’ARLIS/NA à St.Louis.
Jo
Beglo du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada et Randall Speller du Musée des
beaux-arts de l’Ontario ont présenté des conférences lors du colloque
« Histoire du livre et de l’imprimé au Canada » à Vancouver,
du 15 au 17 novembre 2001. Quelques membres d’ARLIS/Canada ont assisté au
colloque. Jo Beglo travaille sur un
projet de publication intitulé « L’histoire des bibliothèques d’art
au Canada ». Certains membres canadiens ont contribué à ce recueil. La
date limite des sousmissions est le 15 mai 2002. La conférence de Jo portait
sur le programme de publications du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada.
Randall à parlé d’Arthur Steven et la maison d’édition Ryerson
Press. Jo Beglo s’occupe du projet « L’histoire des bibliothèques au
Canada ».
En
2001, deux membres canadiens ont reçu des prix d’ARLIS/NA et ont aussi été
nommés à des postes. Jonathan Franklin du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada a reçu
le H.W. Wilson Foundation Research Award pour une étude bibliographique des
catalogues d’encans d’art. Et, il fut nommé éditeur du site WEB d’ARLIS/NA.
Kathy Zimon fut nommé au poste de
co-éditrice de la publication Art Documentation.

La
planification de la réunion conjointe à Banff procède bien. La rencontre du
Chapitre ARLIS/NW et ARLIS/Canada va avoir lieu du 31 mai au 2 juin 2002, à
Banff en Alberta. Le thème de la rencontre est «Springtime in the Rockies » .
ARLIS/Canada a reçu l’aide financier d’ARLIS/NA pour cette réunion. Pour

Dans
le numéro de juin 2001 du périodique ARLIS/NA Update, Carole Goldsmith et Paul
Chénier ont publié un rapport des
activités d’ARLIS/Canada. Carole a aussi affiché des nouvelles sur le site
carlis-l au début du mois de mai. Carole a envoyé un rapport pour la réunion
d’automne de la section ARLIS/MOQ.

La
réunion du printemps d’ARLIS/MOQ s’est déroulée le 11 mai au siège
social du Cirque du Soleil à Montréal sous le thème des projets de numérisation
avec des présentations par une artiste numérique et par les membres de la
section. La réunion d’automne a eu lieu à Hull, au Musée canadien des
civilisations. Les visites offertes aux membres étaient au Centre de Préservation
des Archives nationales du Canada à Gatineau ou au Centre d’art indien et
inuit, Affaires indiennes et du
Nord. Le chapitre offre maintenant trois bourses de perfectionnement
professionnel : une bourse de voyage pour participer au Congrès annuel
d’ARLIS/NA, une bourse d’adhésion à ARLIS/NA et une nouvelle bourse de
voyage spéciale pour participer à une conférence autre que le congrès annuel
d’ARLIS/NA. Jonathan Franklin a reçu la bourse de voyage pour le congrès
annuel d’ARLIS/NA à Los Angeles. Le chapitre travaille sur un projet de mise-à-jour
du Répertoire des dossiers documentaires en art en architecture.
Le
chapitre d’ARLIS/Ontario s’est réuni à London, Ontario le 25 mai au London
Public Library et à l’University of Western Ontario. Les visites offertes ont
permis aux membres de voir les collections d’histoire locales et régionales
de ces institutions. Les membres ont aussi visité la Mcintosh Gallery et le
John Labatt Visual Arts Centre à l’University of Western Ontario où
l’assemblée générale s’est déroulée. Carole Goldsmith a assisté à
cette réunion. Organisée par Theo De Vos, la rencontre d’automne a eu lieu
à Eliot Lake, au White Mountain Academy of the Arts, du 28 au 30 septembre. En décembre, un petit groupe enthousiaste de la section a
fait une levée de fonds au Musée des beaux-arts de l’Ontario pour la bourse
de voyage. Mary Kandiuk, de York University a
reçu la bourse de voyage pour assister au congrès annuel d’ARLIS/NA
à Los Angeles.
Début
2001, un tremblement de terre a secoué certaines régions dans l’état de
Washington et certaines bibliothèques des membres du chapitre ARLIS/NW ont subi
des dommages. Les membres de la région de Vancouver furent attristés par le décès
soudain de Rose Emery du Vancouver Art Gallery.
La rencontre du printemps a eu lieu au Vancouver Art Gallery. Le conférencier
invité a parlé de la planification de mesures d’urgence (sujet opportun).
Après la réunion, les membres ont visité l’exposition Cornelius Krieghoff.
La réunion annuelle d’automne a eu lieu le 1 décembre à l’Univeristy of
British Columbia où les membres ont visité l’exposition « Spirit of
Islam » au Anthropology Museum. Les membres ont aussi approuvé les mises-à-jour
des statuts et règlements du chapitre qui furent présentés à ARLIS/NA pour
approbation.
Marylin
Nasserden, de l’University of Calgary a accepté de co-présider le Comité de
planification de la réunion à Banff avec James Rout. Elle espère que les coûts de la rencontre seront compensés
par des levées de fonds et commanditaires. Les membres de la section attendent
avec enthousiasme la venue de la deuxième conférence régionale d’ARLIS/Canada.
