Executive Board Activities

Attended annual and mid-year board meetings.

Served as Board liaison for Public Policy Committee, North American Relations Committee, Professional Development Committee, and Space Planners RT.

Regional Activities:

Contributed two articles to South Region chapters' newsletters.

Acknowledged all outgoing and continuing Chapter officers with thank you letters.

Attended ARLIS/Texas-Mexico annual meeting in Houston, Texas in October. Attended the ARLIS/SE annual meeting in Raleigh, NC in October. Attended the ARLIS/DC-MD-VA meeting at the Baltimore Museum of Art in January. At each of these meetings, I made a South Regional Representative's report on the activities of the Executive Board and encouraged the members to renew their membership and to attend the Annual Conference in Los Angeles.

Sent names of two prospective members to the ARLIS/DC-MD-VA Secretary/Treasurer.

Chapter Activities:

The ARLIS/DC-MD-VA Chapter met three times during the year. The Chapter is enthusiastic about having the 2003 ARLIS/NA Annual Conference in Baltimore now that it has been approved by the Executive Board. The 2001 Chair and Vice/Chair are both from Baltimore and are already making plans for the Conference.

The ARLIS/SE Chapter met in Raleigh, NC from October 19th to 22nd. The members were introduced to collections at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. The LoPresti Award continues to be given by the ARLIS/SE Chapter. The Chapter was awarded $500 for expenses of the October 2001 meeting in Boca Raton, FL.

The ARLIS/Texas-Mexico Chapter met in Houston, TX from October 12-14th. The meeting was full of opportunities to see important collections and to hear stimulating lectures. The Chapter is working to include more of their Mexico members at both the regional and national levels. The Chapter continues to offer the Lois Swan Jones Award. The ARLIS/NA Executive Board approved the Chapter's request for $500 to pay the travel expenses for a new member from Mexico to attend the Chapter meeting in 2001 in Albuquerque.

Issues for the Board:

The ARLIS/Texas-Mexico Chapter will continue to need support and guidance from the Board to increase participation of members from Mexico. The $500 award for 2001 will be a great help in accomplishing this goal. This is a vital and enthusiastic Chapter and I am confident that they will develop creative ways to bring these new members into the Chapter, as well as into the activities of ARLIS/NA.

The ARLIS/DC-MD-VA Chapter increased the number of its meetings this year to three. The 2003 Annual Conference in Baltimore should help to galvanize this group. Preparations are already underway and the officers are committed to making the Conference a successful one.

The ARLIS/SE Chapter meeting in Raleigh, NC brought an impressive number of members to the area. With the incoming South Regional Representative coming from the ARLIS/SE Chapter, I am sure that the Chapter will continue to build its membership. The two meetings that I have attended in Atlanta (1999) and Raleigh (2000) were professionally planned and provided tours and lectures of a very high quality. I commend the officers for their hard work.

I have found that serving as South Regional Representative for the last two years has been an extremely interesting and rewarding opportunity. I have met people and seen areas of the country that I probably would not have experienced otherwise. I regarded my serving in this office as a "contribution" to ARLIS/NA in exchange for the many benefits I have received from the Society over the years. However, I firmly believe that in order to continue to attract active and committed members, the Society needs to consider additional financial support for the Executive Board. The contributions that I made in terms of money and time might not be feasible for a less senior member of the Society.
