Chapter Meetings
ARLIS/NC held three meetings in 2000.
Spring
Date: April 25, 2000.
Place: Thomas F. Schwarz,
Bookseller.
Speaker: Stuart Bennett,
an antiquarian bookseller who specializes in English books printed
before 1850.
Attendance: 16
Business meeting highlights: The 2000 Directories were distributed. Sue announced the creation of the ARLIS-NC web site, produced and maintained by Lena Stebley. Handouts of the Site’s homepage were made available. The Pittsburgh conference was a success. Of the 1,200 total ARLIS members, 600 attended the annual conference in March. The ARLIS-NC basket raised over $200 at the conference auctions. The auction raised a total of $6,700 for scholarships. The new ARLIS Western Regional Representative is Leslie Abrams of UC San Diego. The question was raised if all NC members have e-mail, to which the general response was no. It was agreed that all flyers need to be send via regular US mail in addition to e-mail.
Thank you to Laurie Thompson for arranging and hosting the event.
Summer
Date: August 3, 2000.
Place: California College of Arts and
Crafts, San Francisco campus.
Tour: New CCAC San Francisco campus by
David Meckel, Dean of the CCAC School of Design.
Speaker: Ginni Dofflemyer, PhD.
Topic: “Ancient
Cambodia and the Cult of the Temple Mountain”.
Attendance: 12
Business meeting highlights: After a one hour walking tour of the campus and a 45 minute lecture, a brief business meeting was held. The discussion primarily revolved around chapter dues and the importance of paying them. A member thanked us for having a meeting on a weekday that wasn’t a Friday. She mentioned it’s difficult for her to get away on Fridays. A brief discussion of our contribution to the LA Conference was held. Subjects held over for further discussion at the next meeting included budget, fundraising & donation to the LA Conference.
Special thanks to CCAC Librarian Michael Lordi for all his help.
Fall
Date: November 2, 2000
Place: Berkeley Art Museum
Tour: Environmental Design Archives, UCB
Speaker: Berkeley Art Museum Director
Kevin Consey
Topic: History and future of the Berkeley
Art Museum
Attendance: 26
Business meeting highlights: The Chair proposed to raise our dues to $15.00/year, and pointed out that several other chapters charge this same amount. Any profit the ARLIS/NC chapter receives will be given back to members in the form of subsidized events. A quorum of 25 members was present, and the raising of dues to $15 was ratified by member vote (21 “yes” votes).
The position of Vice-Chair/Chair Elect was up for election and an explanation of duties was given. Nensi Brailo from CCAC was nominated and elected to the office.
The 2001 ARLIS/NA conference will be held in March at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Beverly Hills. The LA Chapter would like us to contribute to the conference, and the idea was proposed to sell water bottles customized with ARLIS conference labels. Label and ink colors were discussed as well as cost. The hotel will allow our chapter to sell our own merchandise on site.
Last year, each chapter donated a basket. Approximately $7,000 was raised in the auction of these baskets. News about whether baskets will be made again for the 2001 conference will be on the listserv. Anyone not subscribed to the listserv should send an email to Sue Koskinen. For more information on the conference, see the website: http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/csj/arlis/2001/. The ARLIS/NC web site is also up and running http://www.sirius.com/~stebley/arlisnc/index.html]
Leslie Abrams was not able to attend the meeting, but sent news from the ARLIS/NA Board, which was read by Chair Alice Egan.
Karen Kessel and Andree LeBourveau, VRA local chapter nominating committee Two VRA positions are available: Chair and Secretary. The national VRA conference will be held in Chicago in February, 2001. For more information, contact karen.kessel@sonoma.edu or anlebour@cabrillo.cc.ca.us
