A Project of the Central Plains Chapter,
Art Libraries Society of North America

A very special acknowledgement should be given to members of the Art Libraries
Society of North America Central Plains Chapter: all the information in this
Union List comes from them. Without the support and participation of the
members of the Central Plains Chapter there would be no document and no list.
Many thanks to the art librarians who took time out of their busy schedules
to search their collections and to fill out the multitudinous forms they
were sent. Thanks also to Karen Meizner who initiated the project and kept
it active for many years.
This publication owes its presence to the Art Libraries Society of North
America's Research Fund. Without the Research Fund's generous support this
publication would be a draft document languishing in chapter files. Thanks
are due for this financial assistance.
The Saint Louis Art Museum has been most generous with the time and talent
necessary to coordinate the collection of data and the creation of the final
publication. Other staff at the Saint Louis Art Museum who were invaluable
in forming this document were Stephanie Sigala, (Head Librarian), who wrote
the ARLIS/NA grant application; Susan Patterson, (Head, Information Services),
who designed the database formats; and Cheryl Vogler, (Slide Curator), who
entered the data.
Marianne L. Cavanaugh, Project Coordinator
The Saint Louis Art Museum
A serial exhibition is a recurring exhibition with a distinct organizer,
format, or theme. Serial exhibitions can occur regularly (as in the case
of annual or biennial exhibitions) or irregularly at the whim of the organizer.
Tracking the history of serial exhibitions is notoriously difficult but a
key identifying characteristic is the number of each exhibition. The number
links what can be a mystifying succession of location changes, catalog format
changes, and slight title changes to create a documentary history of artistic
taste in a particular region.
The Central Plains Union List of Serial Exhibition Catalogs identifies serial
exhibitions held at locations within the Central Plains area of the United
States (Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma) and shows locations
where catalogs of these exhibitions can be found. Many of the exhibitions
documented here are of regional importance, are unique in subject matter,
and are otherwise undocumented in any national database. A sample of the
newly identified exhibitions includes the Midwest Biennial Designer Craftsmen
Exhibition (Omaha, NE), the Five Civilized Tribes Museum Master Art Show
(Muskogee, OK), and the Annual Exhibition of the Society of Western Artists
1897-1915. Thus the publication includes new information about exhibitions
covering many media, subjects, ethnic groups, and time periods. Knowledge
of these exhibitions is critical to scholars, students, and museum personnel
who wish to research artists and art movements in the central United
States.
The Central Plains Union List of Serial Exhibition Catalogs was begun as
an ARLIS/Central Plains Chapter project in 1985 under the supervision of
Karen Meizner, then at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. By 1987, an initial
draft of the Union List containing 80 exhibition titles had been produced
from the holdings of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City), the Philbrook
Museum (Tulsa), the Joslyn Museum (Omaha) and The Saint Louis Art Museum.
The Union List then languished for several years until a new group of chapter
members began recreating the initial database and expanding holdings in late
1992.
In the initial phase of the project titles were submitted by four major museums
in the geographic region of ARLIS/CP. More precise information was received
during the second phase of the project, beginning in 1992. At that time,
the original titles were sent out to a wider selection of participants. This
was the first time some exhibiting institutions saw their own exhibition
data. They were able to provide more complete holdings, previous and succeeding
titles, the numbering of some exhibitions, and informative notes. Over 30
new titles were submitted by this wider group of participants during 1993.
The exhibition titles were verified in the Research Libraries Information
Network bibliographic utility (RLIN). However, since a number of them did
not appear in RLIN, a great deal of trust and authority was given to the
participating institutions to submit accurate information.
Title
This field refers to the preferred title of an exhibition. In most cases,
this is the title on the first exhibition catalog.
Alternative title(s)
This field was included to make reference to any other title associated with
the exhibition. Because this is an indexed field adequate access to all the
titles of an exhibition is provided, whether or not it is the first or preferred
title.
Major concerns about whether titles are the selected Title, or an Alternative
title were alleviated by the inclusion of an index. Whether a change in title
was significant enough to demand a separate heading was decided by the
participating institution. Each title was entered as the institution submitted
it, unless an obvious error was detected.
Organization(s)
This field brings together all the sponsors, or galleries and museums where
an exhibition may have been held. The form of name of an organization is
used as it was when the exhibition was held, or was entered as it was
submitted.
Place
This field refers to a geographic region, usually the city and state where
an exhibition was held. Occasionally when the location varies, the largest
stable entity is input. For example, when the location varies within a state
the state is input into the Place field, and the various cities are input
into the Notes field.
Notes
This field covers a multitude of special circumstances. Some things contained
in the Notes field are: frequency, states or regions covered by an exhibition,
"continues", and "continued by" notes, and changes in location. Throughout
the life of a serial exhibition, some years will have catalogs, others checklists
or invitations. In some years a show will be held with no document published.
For this project, checklists, brochures and invitations, as well as catalogs
resembling books were included. Our participants have tried to list these
variations in the Notes field.
Holdings
Here are listed the codes for the holding library and then a compressed,
but complete, list of numbers/years held in their collection. There are several
entries that have sparse holdings. They were included when it was considered
important to identify that an exhibition occurred.

Artists determine the venue, which changes each year. The venue usually included
Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Cleveland, (the
six original centers for the Society). The centers were later reduced to
five with the omission of Cleveland. The venue has at times included Toledo
and Pittsburgh. The number of venues can vary from four to seven. Works were
exhibited for sale. The St. Louis Museum of Fine Arts catalogs are included
in the series "Special exhibition catalogue" for that year. In 1909 the St.
